+1 Butch, I've been doing it exactly the same for over a year now, and it seems to just get better!

I am pretty sure that I now have a source of Grainland Select COB, and need to find some local horses that would like to eat the rest of my bag of Country Acres sweetfeed with pellets.

It would be difficult to take chikens to the trailer park in Arizona for the snowbird thing, and I really do NOT want to feed the racoons. The Country Acres is probably going to get unceremoniously dumped in the compost pile.

Well, I'll be taking a 100 mile drive on Sunday, to pick up a couple of the last bags of Producer's Pride All Grain to be found in my AO. Figured since they're discontinuing it I should stock up before it's gone, as there's nothing comparable to be found in my neck of the woods. For some reason barley is unavailable in my area of WI, otherwise I'd just go the 'make my own' route.

Re: sweetfeed whisky
So I finally broke into one of the bags of I found at Tractor Supply.
I found what appears to be bone meal clumps, not pellets, but the clumps are easily broken up with very little effort.
Also, it appears to have very little if any molasses. Previous bags had a noticeable coating.
Perhaps this is why it was discontinued/unavailable. A screw up at production maybe.
So I am not sure I will use it if I have to sit down and pick out the clumps and add a jar of molasses.

you can lead a horse to water but it's hard as hell to drown it
Re: sweetfeed whisky
Just making my first attempt. Used Nutrena Rocky Mt. sweet mix. Recipe:
6 lbs Sweetfeed
5 lbs sugar
1 lb brown sugar
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup molasses
2 packs yeast
It started to bubble almost immediately. It has been bubbling away for 2 days now...

Re: sweetfeed whisky
How much grain do you add back to each gen?
Re: sweetfeed whisky
Basically you replace what you remove...
on my batches i followed the guideline as presented earlier in this thread.... the spent grain that floated and any corn that looked gray ... in the end it seemed i didnt have to add much more to it. I maybe used 20 pounds over all the generations, everyone gets a feel for what is best for their creative adventure...
personally i started adding more molasses back into the ferment, 3-4 pounds in a 11 gallon container that was nearly a third full of grain.
a larger fermenter would have been very useful. luckily i had a 11 gallon pail . whick meant i had a bout 6 gallons of wash to run each generation.
I ran all my sweetfeed through the 3" Boka i made first, wish i had my flute then.

Thanks Rastus, I skimmed over the recipe so fast I missed that part. Never pays to be in a hurry, sorry for the redundant question.

Re: sweetfeed whisky
BTW-
I give my horses sweetfeed, especially in winter, but I'm no expert that's been raising horses for over 30 years....just some internet professional.
The term "sweet" in sweetfeed is nominal in case anyone didn't know.
Im not even going to dig into 110+ pages and pick this thread apart. I see enough on the first page to know where the port-o-john of opinion is.
Dnderhead wrote:sweet feed is not generally given to horses they do not digest sugar well. but some times given as a treat/training as horses love sweets. sweet feed is more of a cow/goat? thing.

Re: sweetfeed whisky
I generally scrape off approximately the top inch or so, the stuff that looks depleted/pale, then add a cup or 3 of new to each batch...based (eyeballed) on the amount removed and guesstimated expansion of the added grain. YMMV may vary based on the size of your fermenter.BoisBlancBoy wrote:Thanks Rastus, I skimmed over the recipe so fast I missed that part. It's not really a rocket surgery calculation, nor is it meant to be, and as others have mentioned in the thread, if you prefer more of the rumsky flavor in your final product it's good to put in some additional molasses each generation or so.

Re: sweetfeed whisky
Are ya'll having any trouble with the flavor carrying over when you do a stripping run and then a spirit run? I ran my pot still pretty slow until i got to the end of the hearts and then cranked it up to pull the tails out. The hearts taste so good I almost hate to put em back in for an actual spirit run if it isn't going to carry the same flavor!
Thanks, BB

If this is in here Im sorry I cant find it. I siphoned off the grain but how do I get the liquid that is left in the grain? I did a 30 gal run and there is probably 5 gal or so in the SF. I know I am to just take a little off the top and replace it with new so do you just leave the liquid in and just add to it also?

Re: sweetfeed whisky
Just ran a batch of sweet feed that had been sittin for probably around 3 weeks. Started coming out fast. I run a keg still so I threw out 750ml. After that I went to measure the abv, when I would expect it to be its highest, and it was only 30%. I was expecting around 160 proof and ended up with 60 proof being my highest. This was my first run on the new keg still, anybody have an idea on what went wrong?
Thanks, BB
