Googe I have been giving this some thought as we in the US are a melting pot of different nationalities. Years ago I did a tour of the south along the Mississippi River and a lot of towns are still finding bullets from the civil war and they would definitely take offense to being called "Yanks". I am not sure how we are coined Americans other than our country is called "United States of America" but when I travel seems like a lot of the world calls us "Americans", Canada "Canadians" and Mexico "Mexicans".

Yanks is entirely appropriate in my book. Question for the New Zealanders though: is EnZed OK? I've used it for years and only get odd looks from fellow 'Muricans but since we're on the subject...

I would never say yank or Yankee in polite company.

Context is everything IMO. Yankee is a label used here in the USA by Southerners to describe Northern people and appeals. Southern Americans are not yankees.

We had a bloody civil war between north and south which forever left a scar. Culture and geography separates us, so verbal labels make good sense.

Saying yank to get a rise would be insulting, but that would be the intention and most folks can tell the difference... Besides, there are properly derogatory words that some southerners use which are intended to be offensive... "Carpetbagger" for example describes a northerner buying property in the South, and it is an extremely hateful thing to say to someone.

I think the name calling between Aussies and NZ is hilarious and always gives me a smile.

Currently Southern Alabama & if I lived any further south, I'd have to be on a boat! Grew up in the North. Regularly people in Alabama scowl and say, "You'll from the North ain't ya?"

Once, an old woman here gave me some guff about having a Japanese car. Her son apologized.

I said, "still sore about WWII?"

He said, "Don't let her hear you're from the North!"

I've got no problem with Yanks.

We're so fractured here each state/region came up with it's own name. State by state we could be Buckeye's, Hoosier's, Cornhusker's, Flatlander, Troll, Ridge Runner, Briar, Hillbilly, Sand Cutter...list goes on and on.

I would venture to say it's a bit more than just buying property. It's been thrown around plenty down here in the past few years.

When people from up north came down to profit off of the hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill disasters, it was pretty tense with some of the ol' boys on the bayou. They didn't like non-local folks coming in and taking their work.

Aside from that, the more preferred term for us down here is "Coonass".

Coloradoans are frequently referred to as greenies. This started due to our license plate but has recently taken on a whole new meaning.

You Aussies prolly won't get this, but older Americans know that this was from a humor shtick back in the 70's.

It's like us calling the Brits POM's. It's OK, till you call them whingeing poms or pomme bastards. Most Americans have no idea where the name Yank came from. The English started calling the northern colonies Yankee before the French and Indian war. When Pennsylvania went to war against New York, the Pennsylvanians called the New Yorker's Yankees. During the War of Independence, Yankee Doodle was an American Battle Song.
So Yank is OK..... as far as I've been told. Kiwi

Well KB its past down to me the the First Nations people of the northern French colonies called the English Yangee, it was their phonetic rendering on the French word for English. It does stand to reason that the word corrupted to Yankee came to mean colonists of the former English colonies. Just speculation but it makes some sense

While there are a lot of countries on the American continents, I believe the USA is the only country with the word America in its official name.(as far as I know anyway.) That would be my guess as to why were called americans just out of natural human laziness and shortening our name.

Same but different in India, was traveling with a mate and we hung out with the local lads for a few days.
All of a sudden as we were walking along they took a hold of our hands and proceeded to walk down the street as a loved up couple.... thats how they show they are friends, would have preferred an arm around my shoulder....
I'm very accepting of other peoples cultures but this one took me aback a fair bit, i didn't pull it away or push him away, just worked it in to the conversation, look whats over there, points with now freed hand and made sure to have a bit more room between us as we were walking along.
