late night runs.....
Thank god I'm not in and out of the bathroom at the moment!
Anyone else here that likes to run in the middle of the night?
Feels more "traditional" for some reason and gets me closer to the "roots".
Didn't know where to post this as it's not off topic and I'm a more old fasioned pot distiller at heart ...(that and the majority of my personal runs are in pot anyway).

I like to get my runs done before I have a beer, regardless of the time.

Early morning for me, most times of the year it's too hot by about noon.

Nopers, can't do the night thang. Cuz I'm gettin old and bedtime is at 9 pm. I prefer to run in the morning, I like to hear the chickens. I did a run yesterday and started at 10 am and didn't stop till 8:30 Pm. 10 1/2 frickin hours! I typically do pot runs, but this was a reflux run. 93% all day. Glad to have the spirits mind you. Just that it was a long day.

The night I cleaned and did a sac run it was late and there was a bright full moon out. I was excited about it.Worm_Drippinz wrote:Thank god I'm not in and out of the bathroom at the moment!

How big of a charge did you run? Was this on the new CCVM?GrassHopper wrote:Nopers, can't do the night thang. Cuz I'm gettin old and bedtime is at 9 pm. I make sunshine.
Honestly the act of distilling bores me. If I distilled at night then there would be a problem. I distill during the day because I am more alert and thus it has become a safety concern.

Anytime day or night is good with me, as long as I have a drink to do it with.
But why is the rum gone? Capt Jack Sparrow

This was an all heads run from many UJSSM collections. Been takin up space in one of my carboys so I thought I better run it. I had around 5-6 gallons and diluted to 35% and ran a reflux run. Yes, it was on the CCVM. Ran good....just a steady pencil lead stream at 93% all day. I quit when I was still pulling 93% cuz I was tired. I will check the boiler charge later to see what the ABV that is left is and how much I pulled out of it. I know that I put 6 gallons of likker in there, so I Don't know what I got yet, will do the cuts tonight. Probably still a lot of heads. What is interesting is the all tails run I did recently. I got some of the best flavored drink yet out of it. I ran 8 gallons of I think and ended up with around 4 gal of 92% (8 gallons after diluting to drinking strength). That run only took about 8 hrs....go figure. Sorry for gettin of topic OP.
Re: late night runs.....
I definitely prefer night runs. Not always possible but I like sitting in the dark with just a small light. kids are in bed and wife can't complain that I should be doing something else. Saturday nights are best because local radio station plays old time country music. Opening theme song happens to be
Grampa Jones good ole Mountain Dew. BIn pretty comfortable in the garage the last few years but I would like to head back outdoors and down by the steam below the house and use the light of the moon Ca'mon.

i used to take the day off from work and run it while the kids were at school, now i prefer the night run. start the boiler at midnite, and 3 hours later shut er down and go to bed. next morning i do my cleaning and mix the next wash and thank the good lord for the abundance of my harvest.
praise the lord and pass the molasses.

Re: late night runs.....
Day or night, stilling with a friend is best. I like runnng into the late evening, early morning. For night stillin, I have gotten in the habit of placing my collection jar into a larger collection container, in the event I miss an alarm and it overflows. I only had to make that mistake once.
Speaking of alarms, I stole my boy's Amazon Dot (Alexa) for my stillin room. It's so nice setting alarms verbally, while I work. Great for late night, as it gives me someone to talk to. She even has an opinion on what her favorite Bourbon is.

Re: late night runs.....
One day I will put a loudspeaker where I still.
It is on the wok burner of the grill, outside the big window into the room where the TV is. At the moment I can see it but not hear it.
And there is not much worth watching on TV even with cable so I might get my grandson to figure out how to listen to youtube music there, on maybe the iPad. On WiFi?
Currently listening to Nana Mouskouri, and Claudio Arrau playing classical piano.

I prefer to start late in the evening. It's relaxing listening to the crickets, frogs and the rattle of the dog chain.

I like to start filling the boiler at 430-5 am so by the time the thumper is thumping the chickens are strutting and the deer are coming home for the day.
I shot my biggest Tom (24lbs) 20 minutes after sunrise and the thumper just started to purr, cleaned the bird in between changing jars. Great day that was!!!
