reduce then elbow, the benefit will be in your pocket.
you may want to reduce more gradual though, no experience in that area but some thing tells me it's to big of a reduction for optimal performance

Depends I your condenser, what sort are you using?. if it's a liebig, a 2" elbow would be better, than reduce to a union for height adjustment and ease of storage etc. and gives a bit more strength in that area your liebigs hanging off. if your using a worm, than a hakf elbow straight off the column shoukd be fine. reducing straight from 2" to half is fine. Either way works well though.

I have a 1-1/2" column and elbow that reduces to a 5/8s then runs to a worm. Works great for me. I put a few copper scubbers in there for a slight reflux and run it low and slow.

Used to run a keg cut to fit a copper cap that had a column of same diameter and height(just shy a foot) and used it the other way around, reducer then 5/8ths elbow and it also worked damn good. No scrubbers in that one.

I use a thumper (doubler). I have a 50l keg as a main boiler, a 2" copper pipe to a cap with a 1" pipe extending from it, then elbow, union, elbow down into another 2" cap and pipe on my 30l keg thump. the 1" goes down through the 2" to the liquid and the vapour from the thump comes out the 2" through a 1/2" pipe to a leibig. If you want a thump, I would recommend bigger than 1/2 or 5/8" between boiler and thump myself
