I'll have to go over there and take a look
Here's a couple pics of the valved plate. The downcomer isn't soldered yet.

What is the purpose of the dimples on the underside of the plate?shadylane wrote:I'll have to go over there and take a look

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
I don't think they are dimples, they are perforations / holes.
My question is do you think that's going to be enough hole area for the plates, looks a bit light on to me.

Glad someone ask that question, I don't think there's enough hole area either.Saltbush Bill wrote:I don't think they are dimples, they are perforations / holes.

I'm notoriously lazy, I learned long ago, re-drilling a hole smaller is difficult
I figure, drilling as many small holes as possible, where the valves ain't, will be what happens after the first run.

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
Started making a sieve plate today, had to go to town for more drill bits and some bandaids
When I got home these where setting on the porch
Naturally I had to take it apart and change it.
The glass that came with the sight tube was a little thicker than the other two glass cylinders,
so I had to modify one of the seals.

For the record.
The plates are going to be run one at a time.
Until I find out what works.

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
Using these part's makes it real easy to add or subtract plates.
Not to mention the info and entertainment of watching the plates work.

Are you going to make full sets of plate assemblies for each style system?

Eventually, first I'm going to tinker with the individual, prototype plates until they work right.LWTCS wrote:shadylane wrote:Using these part's makes it real easy to add or subtract plates.

Then I'll make a full set of each. I'm sure being able to see what's happening will make experiments easier.
Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
Is that just three glass sections stacked as one? That looks awesome Shady. Did you post what that is and where you bought it? Or could you PM me please?

Imo full sets of like plate assemblies will behave more favorably than the mixed bag.shadylane wrote:Eventually, first I'm going to tinker with the individual, prototype plates until they work right.LWTCS wrote:shadylane wrote:Using these part's makes it real easy to add or subtract plates.

Either way, the ability to see quite clearly is a very good tool indeed.
Separate and apart from that, please comment on the 3 plates as you render some finish product.
I find that four plates allows for very fast run speeds while holding a rock sold abv for hearts ccollection.

The boiler will be charged with low-wines from an all grain mash, so the first distillation will already be done.LWTCS wrote:Either way, the ability to see quite clearly is a very good tool indeed.

Figure three plates will do what I want, if not, I'll add some more
Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
Ah, with a strip already done you should get a nice long hearts section.shadylane wrote:The boiler will be charged with low-wines from an all grain mash, so the first distillation will already be done.LWTCS wrote:Either way, the ability to see quite clearly is a very good tool indeed.

Here's a full set of caps, I just completed.
I got lazy and bought some copper fittings.
Of course I had to modify them

On a side note.
When the 1" PTFE tape comes in, I'll post a couple easy ways to make the silicon seals meet the requirements of rule # 8

The strip runs are made from 60% wheat, 20% corn and 20% oats.LWTCS wrote:Ah, with a strip already done you should get a nice long hearts section.shadylane wrote:The boiler will be charged with low-wines from an all grain mash, so the first distillation will already be done.LWTCS wrote:...please comment on the 3 plates as you render some finish product.

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
I finally got to play with the 4" glasser. I stole the reflux condenser off the packed column and the shotgun off the stripper.
First thing I figured out is the RC was too big, had to turn the cooling water down to a drip.
Guess the next part of this project will be making a new reflux condenser.
Here's a pic of it running at almost 3-1/4 gallons an hour.
It seemed happier running at 2-1/2 gph but I just had to crank it up.

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
I've driven a packed column enough times, to figure out how to make it do what I want. BUT
Driving a plated column appears to be different. Guess I need to figure this out

Nice there shady you are one building Mother. Been following your adventures and enjoying them. I 'm not sure so I'll ask was the run in the pic with the 3 single cap plates or the 3 different styles. I will comment if you want some of what I found with dissimilar plates in the column.

The run was with 3 identical single caps.
And I'll gladly take any comments or advice.

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
You certainly don't mess around once you get an idea in your head shady lol, nice job . 2+ gallons an hour sounds rather high lol, did the product taste OK?. Are your down comers 1/2"?, thought it might be to small.

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
The boiler was charged with nasty feints and water at 15% abv and the product tasted like it
The down comers are 1/2" and I had trouble with the plates flooding and vapor blowing up the down comers.
Figure I had too much power, reflux and not enough liquid in the traps.
I'll mod the traps to see if that will help and definitely drive it slower

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
Here's a drawing of how I might make a reflux condenser that fits inside the top of the glass column.
I saw someone else making a similar RC but forgot who it was and can't find their original post.
Figured it would be fun to watch the condenser sweat and drip
Hope the drawing makes sense

Re: 4" glass bubble plate column
nothing says it has to be a case and tube, a graham or some other condenser may lead itself way better to this application
