Transferring Mash to Still
Thanks in advance for the help. I am about to have brain surgery and am going to be limited on what I can lift for quite a while. I am wanting to try and pump my mash from my fermenter to my still. So, has anyone successfully pumped before? If so, did you use some kind of screen to not suck up the thick stuff at the bottom? Is there any kind of bag that I can put the ,for instance, sweet feed into to keep it from collecting on the bottom (Tea Bag idea)? Thanks for the help.

This is the pump I use. Wrap in a sock and drop in the ferment.

Damn. Hadn't thought about a pond pump. Was discussing this with the Distilling Goddess earlier today.

Consider knee high nylons. I haven't tried panty hose.

Plenty of choices from the home-brew beer suppliers. For example ...

More expensive than a pond pump, not intended to be submerssible, but more rugged and designed to handle high temp fluids.

I just use a 1/2 inch hose weighted on one end and on the output end I use cheese cloth I attach it with an elastic, I syphon slow and it doesn't stir the mash up.

Pond pump in knee high pantyhose. 300 gallon per hour. 5 gallon per minute. 10 gallon mash.....poof. In the still. That pump don't move enough liquid or have enough turbulence to disturb a settled yeast bed.

Add a ball valve or spigot a couple inches above the grain bed and use a brew transfer pump (ex. Chugger)
