Keg Boiler Rocking

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

Keg Boiler Rocking

Post by KYMountainMan »

I was half way into a run today and my Boiler started lightly rocking back and forth and the distillate slowed down to a trickle.

Boiler is only half full.

What's causing this?

It's huffing I think.
The chance of huffing rises during the run (higher temp, lower abv).
Liebig or worm?

Reflux using copper packing and cross cooling at top of column

And the product cooler? Length, diameter.
How much power?
Column diameter?

Should I lower my Boiler temp and allow it to equalize?

My keg still rocks too, often. I have sight glasses on the side of my boiler, so I can see inside. The rocking is just from vigorous boiling at 4kW. No problem.

OK. I have my 5500w element just below 1/2 on the controller and it stabilized.

Is it a brand new keg? Is it upside down or right side up? A pic would help. Might just be a dent in the bottom of the rim...

My column rocks depending on some variables. I've run it empty with a packing retainer plate installed and can observe the rising vapor swirling as it exits the keg and enters the column and attribute the rocking to that swirling.
