Tightening a Tri-Clamp the easy way

Pity coz it seems reading this the butterfly ones are the only ones that need to be finger tight
Perhaps y'all could unscrew the ring handed and replace it with a spring washer loctite and tensile nut, then with a tentioning wrench and extention bar y'all could seat that sucker real snug

Hmmm well it seems that everyone jumped to the conclusion that this thread was about "how to tighten the fuck out of a tri-clamp ."

The way I read it was "how to hold a tri-clamp while you spin the nut up ."......(tightening the fuck out of it is another story .)

And while I don't have issues with tightening tri-clamps myself , I did find the suggested technique a good idea and it was only a few weeks later when I was installing a new brand of antenna tile mount kit that I remembered the hint ( the bolts were too short but the squeeze fixed while I spun the nuts on ...so thanks Hank

LOL Hound Dog , cable TV never really took off in Australia . Optus had a crack at it in Melbourne back in the 90's and that infrastructure is still providing internet ...but
Nearly every house in Aussie has a TV antenna to get Free-to-air TV .
Many people have Foxtel Pay TV via satellite ., but you still need an antenna to get all the free-to-air channels

Wow. I remember them. But anyway I don't have cable, I run an antenna as well. Screw them cable co bastards. I get 20+ good English channels.

cable TV is a very old technology, it was played around with he in the 1950s and given up as a bad joke. It raised its head here again about 1990 with subscription TV but was quickly dumped for satalite . TV is all digital here weather free to air or pay TV. Most internet is via the national boardband network via optic fibre. I use hotspot through my mobile but can hook to the NBN anytime I wish to set up an account
My parents live out in the donga and they have access to the NBN via satalite

Fiber optic is the way to go. When I first moved to my current house the only choice was satellite. That was painfully slow compared to the fiber optic we now have.

@yummyrum yeah good point, my comments were not directed at the OP per say but subsequent posters coming up with ways to tighten the bejesus out of them. Wouldn't want noobies coming on here and thinking ya need to tighten them til the thread strips is all, sometimes my humour can look like a negative vibe

The idea of the original post was an easy way for a person to get a clamp tight without using their thumb as the lever.

for me using channellocks on chrome is a no! no!, and the tiniest bit of flour paste on both sides of your gasket makes the tri-clamp

only necessary to keep the column from falling over.

How dare you go on topic. For shame cob. I have one joint that hates me so I do put a little stank on it if needed. But the rest are just snug, not even close to full retard.. I mean fully finger tight. That said I know that some of the guys here are old enough that their prom theme was fire and Arthritis is a real life problem if ya can't tighten your still down, this helps with that problem.

I use a small screwdriver, I tighten em up pretty good. My vm is stainless and parts are pretty heavy. The tighter the better!

I wiggle the column as I'm tightening the triclamp and use my leatherman in pliers mode to insert in the hole and give a full twist.
As soon as I find a beef piece of steel rod I'll be making this.

Most likely the bottom one, don't feel like fiddling with welders, just bend some 1/4" rod.

Threads like this have me convinced that quite a few folks have no business within a mile of a toolbox and the poster that mentioned beating his ferrules in with a sledge hammer whether in jest or not, should know copper tubing comes in various wall thicknesses to make life easier when using ferrules.

Copper slip joints are the way to go in many instances with a dab of flour paste for sealing as well as safety.
