Saf-Instant Yeast from Gordon Food Services (GFS)

Post by CaptMorgan »

I picked up a 1 lb vacuum sealed block of saf-instant yeast from GFS for $3. Mixed up some birdwatchers with it, putting in 1 tablespoon for every 2 gallons of water. She is bubbling happily away with very warm ambient temps in high eighties and low 90s. Did a test batch with the normal need yeast I usually use. I was a little worried at first since the saf-instant yeast did not form a krausen. With the way it is now, I need not worry. I hope it finishes OK and the end product is good.

I just wanted to warn others about the lack of a krausen since I did not see anything about it when doing a Google search.
Lord, give me patience, but give it to me NOW!

Thanks ss. My control batch with my normal active dry yeast did form a normal krausen on top. Only 3/4 oz of yeast and about a tablespoon for that kind too. It runs about a 1.40 for a strip of 3 envelopes, each has 1/4 oz. So far, birdwatchers is the only wash I have made.
