Impromptu backset chiller

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

Impromptu backset chiller

Post by underdog »

Hiya!

Don't post much, but I read a lot.

Did a UJSSM run today and it took longer than I had planned. We have company coming over and I needed to get the backset cooled down so I could get the next generation kicked off and the still out of the laundry room. I didn't have a lot of time.

Sooooooo. While breaking down the still, I thought I'd just try using my Boka condenser as a chiller, dropping it in my bucket of backset.

Worked like a charm. Cooled that sucker down to 90F in forty minutes.

I also tried Odin's (Mr. Smiley's?) Pure Whiskey approach for the very first time with this run. It'll be interesting to see how this stuff turns out.

I can attest to the quality of whiskey that bitter is able to produce with the boka following the pure whiskey method. An absolute treat to enjoy. Be stringent on your cuts for your keeps to drink right away and add a small amount of more tails back if you plan to age 6+ months as these will blend and add a complexity over time.

Thanks Yak, The stuff you tried was just run in pot mode though :) after taking heads in full reflux.

I have used my boka reflux coil to cool my backset after running too. Works great and even seems to clean any tarnish off the coils. A win-win in my book.
Lord, give me patience, but give it to me NOW!
