Not that he my favorite artist but prince was by far the most talented man I've ever seen touch a 6 sting.
Clapton was once asked how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world and he responded why don't you ask Prince. Now this saying something!

Ha ha :) led zeppelins jimmy page is my all time favorite

But, If someone came up to me in the street I could also say 'Prince' brilliant with the volume up

This is the solo clip, really you have got to listen to the whole song, for when prince cuts in to play, one hell of a guitar performance

Simply amazing! I get the goose pimples everytime I watch that performance. Shame that he died the way he did. Too many great ones go in the same fashion. Rip prince

They're all excellent. I'm only a self-trained, (and very poorly at that,) guitar hack. I only just wish I could play one-tenth as good as any of them and I'd be a happy SOB. They're all different in their techniques and playing styles, but any good player is a good player, whatever their style.

I think mine would be Rik Emmett (formerly of Triumph). He's a very musically educated player. He's got some Royal Conservatory training underneath him. I know this because I actually took lessons from one of his former teachers.

Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen I think all deserve honourable mentions too, but I always thought they were lazy players. If you get a chance to watch them play, watch their fret hand while they're playing. They generally only use 3 fingers - index, middle and ring, and not so much with the pinky finger. Maybe I'm being anal about it, but to me it's just not technically accurate, proper form, whatever... But with that said, I can't argue with their careers. Slash might also fall into this category too.

As far as more current/relevant players go, I think both Brad Paisley and Keith Urban are solid guitar players.
