Over the summer I washed both of my 300w tank heaters and put them up to dry. Short story, I backed into the cabinet they were sitting on and they both hit the garage floor. Damn things are $50 a piece now. Ugh!! Two fresh heaters this year. I hope they last. Sorry, other than eBay you'll pay dear for a quality heater.

Bought mine from : http://www.thatpetplace.com/?gclid=CMCI ... gQodRHwA9w" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Right down the road from the old homestead before I retired. So far so good

I recently broke mine, it was the cherry on top of that particular run.

I decided to just @$&*#@ change yeast for the winter. I'll let you know how THAT goes.

You could try a stainless cartridge heater. Depending on your fermenter, you could used a bulkhead compression fitting. I've seen a few brewers use them in RIMS systems.

I live in a really cold place and do all my runs in the winter, so heating the mash was a huge problem for me.
Well I found a solution that works for me, its kinda diy but ill post it up in case it helps somebody else.
First I went on amazon and bought a digital temp controller like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OX ... UTF8&psc=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
then I went to the hardware and got a rain barrel compression fitting that a standard hot water heater element would screw into. installed the element about a foot above the bottom of my fermenter.
I wired the 110 outlet of the controller to the element then just drop the temp probe in the top of my barrel and plug it in. it can keep my mash at whatever temp I set it at even in below freezing conditions in the shed!
Ohh and no glass to break!

has anyone tried out heat tape? The kind for reptiles. Not the little stuff for wrapping pipes.

This is what I replaced my aqueon glass heaters with, except I bought the 300W. They're pretty accurate and seem to work as well as my old heaters.

Here's the ones I use, they were very cheap so I had very few expectations of them, think I paid 23.99 shipped for 4 of them. I knew I was gonna need 2, since they're glass and I'm a clutz I figured better get 4. They have worked perfect.
They say fully submersible, but they aint..ask me how I know.

Edit: just reread the thread, jb, I think you ordered the one I got.
Overpriced, undersized, 5 gallon ebay electric.
