Slightly Scorched Rye
I slightly scorched a batch of rye whiskey and am curious, can I just turn it into neutral. Will the scorched flavor carry over in a neutral distillation?

A little bit burnt is like a little bit pregnant, sometimes ya just need to kick the barrel over and chalk it to learning.

Re: Slightly Scorched Rye
I had a batch of all barley that was slightly scorched. I was kicking myself because the scorch flavor came from one of the strip batches and I combined them anyway for a spirit run and the hint of scorch flavor/smell still came through. I thought I'd ruined the entire thing. I'm not really sure what scorched as I secondary rack and run my electric element painfully slow. I put it on some oak thinking that if it didn't straighten out I'd re-run it or trash it. After 9 months to a year it's really pretty good with no noticeable scorch flavor. The other guys have a lot more experience than I do, but if you are relegated to re-running it anyway, try putting it on some oak and stick it on the shelf. The only thing you're out is some time.

It's been oaked and is drinkable if mixed, just not up to my standard for sipping whiskey. I'll let it sit and see what happens.

I did a 50 gallon mash of corn oats and rye...had a very small like 1 inch scorch mark in the groove of the ss Barrell. Smelled ok so I put it to fermenting...smelled awesome....ran it..decided to give it a taste a few jars into the run and promptly gagged/ strangled. If I even think it's scorched, it goes to my buddy's hogs.

Btw steam mashing is the way to go,. It also makes life easier when I need 50 gallons of boiling water to dip one of my buddies hogs to scrape his hide.
