Another new guy
Hello, everybody. I am about as new to this as you can get. I see other introductions where people have done some beer or wine making. I've never done either so I'm ready for a steep learning curve. I just found this site last night and have already found out I started out wrong. I bought a one gallon still from Clawhammer Supply. When I searched for people using it I discovered the size is going to really hold me back. So, I think I'll use this one for a short time learning some of the basics and then make a bigger one and let this become a conversation piece on the shelf. It was a fun project regardless so I'm not too upset with starting here. Anyways, I look forward to reading a lot more and having a good time with a new hobby.

Thanks for saying hi, truckin. I have been doing a bunch of reading so far. Getting excited about just running some vinegar through it this weekend.

TB said it pretty much perfectly. Welcome, focus on safety, don't tell, and don't sell. I think you'll get along just fine in our inmate operated asylum.

Hahaha. It's a long off season from playing with cars over the winter so I'll need something to keep me entertained.

Welcome Shiny,
Unlike many hobbies I have endeavored in, this one has payed back tenfold. And the cost to get started is minimal compared to other hobbies.
I think you will like what you make. Enjoy the adventure!

That's the plan. My dad is a welder and I have been looking for a project to practice some TIG on. I'm thinking some sort of stainless steel project would be fun to work on.ukmoon wrote:Welcome ! Nothing wrong with starting with small still ,u can always make a bigger pot

Thanks! My main hobby is cars so I'm used to throwing my play money into a trash can and waving goodbye. Hoping for some cheap fun with this.GrassHopper wrote:Welcome Shiny,

Like you I began with a small still, a 5 liter air pot. It gave me enough confidence and half decent hootch to continue larger. Now having that small still along side a ten gallon pot allows me to easily strip in the big pot and run my cuts in the small one after only a single 10 gallon batch. It's more than enough output for my modest needs.
Re: Another new guy
Well that is encouraging. I'm glad to hear I might get some use out of it on down the line some.Tapeman wrote:Like you I began with a small still, a 5 liter air pot. Welcome in. Like the others said, its small, but i think it would be great for a gin still. If you like gin. Id go buy a bottle of everclear ,proof it down and make gin. Save fermenting till you get a bigger still. Better yet, do the gin and ferment some wine to drink as wine and to familiarize yourself with the process. Then find a beer keg for a boiler.
Jbt
Look up odins easy gin. It is perfect for a still that size.
