hello from UK

Post by Thatstink »

Hi all. New to the forum and to distilling really. I am from the UK and have a pot still and half way through a boka build. I have run about 300l of mash through my pot so far so very mush still learning something new every time. I came to this site to get some help speeding up my pot and some help on the coil/cold finger on the boka so please look out for those posts and help out. Hope I fit here and my names mark by the way.

Running too quick can be a bad thing too.

Hi . 5-6 hrs from start to finish on 12.5l. I make a 25l mash and because of some confusion between USA gallon and UK gallon ended up with a pot that holds 20l to brim so at best I can run 17l. Either way its not the pot size that's the problem. I would like to find a way if possible to run 12l in half that time. Be it a bigger pot/burner/pot rebuild.
At the moment the pots a simple USA 5g stock pot with 15mm tube out the top to a coil (traditional worm)

The boka is a 2" 4ft column. That's as tall as I can go cos ceiling height. Although I might add to it at a later date.

Thanks for your warm welcomes guys.

Welcome Thatstink!
I run a pot still with a USA 14 gallon pot, aprox 52 liters and that goes to a 36" liebig condenser and I run it on a outdoor propane burner.

I also do 25 liter ferments and when I am stripping them I can strip mine in about 1 to 1.5 hours.

When I do a 25 liter spirit run I am usually in the 6.5-7.5 hour range from first drips to shutting her down. Spirit comes out as a fast drip/barely broken stream to a pencil lead sized stream.

Now I have never used a worm condenser so I can't comment on how they should work but I am thrilled with my liebig.

What are you using as a heat source? Electric? Propane?

Cheers Wiz

currently using a cooker top. That's why I have the ceiling issue. funds mean one thing at a time. will move on to propane soon after the new stills up an running. To be honest a few months back I worried I was wasting money. now I am hooked 25l is taking me 12+ hrs. I could handle 6  I work a split shift so time isn't good for me. I don't think the coil is the issue. I think the 15mm but I don't know for sure. whats your pot outlet size.?

I use a liebig condeser, never had a worm. My outlet on the liebig is 1/2" which is around 13mm

I have a 2 foot column coming off the top of my pot (for ease of collection) and then it goes to my condenser from there.

Heres a picture to make it easier
