coming to Merica, late April 2017
For 2 weeks.
For a BBQ.
In NE Kentucky.
And maybe Nascar race (Talladega May 7)
Any suggestions on good things to see or places to visit on the East side about that time of year?
Theres a few things planned, but a bit of time to explore and see what your big country has to offer. And theres the typical budget and time restraints that happens on a big trip overseas. But keen to hear what you think, know or can share.
Oh, and SBB will be coming too. He might be staying longer than what I can.
And if you have a big ol' yank tank you want to hire out, we are all ears. Anything that has a dash board bigger than Texas would be great
Any distilleries of note, any partys, any natural attractions, anyone who wants to have a couple of aussies annoy them for a day or two, we are all ears

Sorry you will not be coming out to God's country on the West Coast. If you or SBB make it out I will take care of you.

If you make it down for the Talladega race there is the Raven Rock Distillery in Fruithurst, Alabama. The Fruithurst winery is right beside it. Visit all the big distilleries in Kentucky while there.

Dont know about the rest of the USA but you are very welcome to Texas if it is in your plans.
Austin has Titos distillery and San Antonio has a few more if you care to visit them.
On down south is the Gulf coast where fish'n is fantastic.
Send me a PM for a cozy & free place to stay in Coastal South Texas for a while.

Don't know about distilleries in San Antone but lone star beer distillery is ok but they also have the lone star buckhorn museum ,worth seeing.Gotta see The Alamo, show due respect,113 brave men died there.Don't miss the river walk either, lots of good places to eat but better tacos can be found in little bumperpull trailers all over town. About 45 miles south of SA is San Marcos tx and aquarena springs, they got mermaids and a scuba diving pig!varocketry wrote:What distilleries, worth seeing (tours, etc.) are in San Antonio? Mermaids and scuba diving pigs? Now thats the sort of advice we need. Inside info on local attractions
Places to get a good feed would be great too, we dont want to get served up racoon pie (unless its good I guess...)
Thanks willee, if travels take us that way you may get a call
Trukinbutch, thanks mate, very kind offer. Crow said you were a good fella too.

May you kind folk take some pity on a couple of wayward Ozzy strangers intent on experiencing your way of life.

you should stay longer, schlep between guest houses to keep the cost down...there is so much to see in North America, after travelling so far...
I was in USA for 18 or 19 days in January. saw a bit of Nevada and a bit of Arizona, you could easily spend a year or two but practically speaking 6 weeks to 3 months to get a good sample. The USA varies so much in scenery and culture, really state -by -state, if you only see one of two of the east states you won't get the big picture.
it would be like us going to Aus and seeing Sydney or Melborne for a visit and thinking we got to see the "real" Aus...well maybe a part of it but not thole thing!
gotta make the juice worth the squeeze. Not seeing Yellowstone would be like missing the outback (ok, maybe arizona and nevada would be more like the outback) Southern Utah is stunning. south west?...you gotta do it. NOLA...Big sur and giant sequoias, San Francisco, lake areas, NYC, Appalachians, Fla... thay are all as different as colors in the rainbow...so much to see so little time...
I finally quit drinking for good.
now i drink for evil.
now i drink for evil.

Re: coming to Merica, late April 2017
@HDNB you are very right. Its going to be tight on time so I guess we are just trying to cram as much in as we can, while still having a good time
I've been around most of Australia, and what you say rings true. One could spend 3 months and still not touch the tip, or spend a lifetime and still not see it all.
I figure the great USA is no different.
I'd love to have the luxury of seeing all the kind folk that have offered hospitality and offered to share their wisdom on local attractions, but as you would well know, life, budgets, time and other life restrictions all come into play.
Me and SBB do want to see some of the same things, but we also want to see a few different things.
For my part, I have 2 main drivers. I have a vested interest in distilling and I'm in discussion with a view to establish a US distributorship (franchise I guess for want of a better word)
I'm also on what you might call a "reconnaissance" mission for a future trip with my family. 2 young kids would love to visit Disney land
But for SBB, this might be the only chance he gets to visit so he has a few other goals/ bucket list things.
All that said, thanks guys for your warm invites and offers of things a tour bus will never give. We still have some time to plan and much to learn about what you guys have hidden away in secret corners

I had a visit from Bob from Nevada, he made mention of how expensive Aussie beer is in comparison to American beer. I'm looking forward to some cheap beer
