Local brewery went larger and is selling off the smaller stuff. I'm trying to think why I shouldn't buy this....
$500 for a 28 gallon brewing kettle. Even mentions in the ad "could be used for distilling or fermenting"...so tempting...

Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

Hmm. Wonder how much shipping from ns to southern ontario would be... assuming he has more than one

Picked up a 40lb bag of deer corn at Sams club over the weekend for $5.81. Best price I've seen close to that was at tractor supply at $9 for 50lbs. Guess I'm going to try that all grain mash sooner than I thought ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
I now have a new favorite kind of firewood
Firewood that has been cut, split and delivered for free
Today one of the guys I work with came by with another load of freshly cut and split cherry wood. He's brought me about 2/3 of a cord now maybe more. Now if I can only get him to stack it for me
It seems like a real shame to use this nice cherry for firewood but I figure I have a year or two to figure out if I really want to turn it into winter heat or maybe make or buy a smoker. I figure I will let some sit for a couple years and see how it works for aging some apple brandy regardless of what else I may do with it.
He also told me he found one of those places like Bushman knows of where the city or state drops off logs for people to help themselves to. So if I ever get my truck and chainsaw running again I'll have to go pick some up.

Cranky, char up a few sticks and add it to some Likker.
I have some that is positively beautiful color; much redder than oak.
Taste??? Not quite sure yet but I need to check on it again.
That fresh split cherry wood has honest to goodness Cherry smell; got some I am using for firewood. A waste.

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
It does smell great, firewood seems like such a waste of it but I shouldn't have to buy any smoking wood for my BBQ for a long time. There is also plenty to let cure for a while then use it for aging. In the mean time this year I am burning 4x4s that I get for free but that is a real waste too, I could actually build a log cabin style house out of the 4x4s I can get for free.Appalachia-Shiner wrote:Cranky, char up a few sticks and add it to some Likker.

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Cranky. You have that many available 4x4s... can you say completely new still shed for free? It would be so easy to build

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Yes I do, I actually have enough 4x4s in my back yard that I could actually build a 7'x10' log cabin style shed right now. I can probably bring over 100 of them home every month. I have been using them as winter heat for a couple years now. I have a very efficient fireplace insert so it only takes a single 4x4x10 to heat my house for an entire day. My real problem now is space, my yard isn't very large. Some day I plan on buying land out in the country and hauling a bunch of these 4x4s out to build sheds and maybe even a house out of.yakattack wrote:Cranky. Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Make a starter and see if its working. Even if its old keep it to boil for yeast bombs. If you dont know about the yeast bomb its in either the hook rum or pugirum recipe. Imo,its the greatest thing since sliced bread!

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Went to a garage sale yesterday. Got a stainless pot, maybe six litres, for two dollars. Last of the big spenders!
I have just got the little still finished, need to clean it up and try it. Holds maybe four and a half litres, will be good for gin later. Used to be a stainless pressure cooker.
So I MAY set up the six litre pot as a boiler, and use the four and a half litre one, with the fixed condenser, for a thumper. Smallest in the world?
But it would be that simple to do, there is still a pressure relief fitting in the lid which I can remove and ream out the hole.... where I could fit the 'thumper inlet'. Just need a tap or something for when I am not using it as a thumper, just a still. I used the other hole to fit the condense, there were two pressure relief thingies, one spring loaded and the other weighted.
Maybe a slip joint with a couple of turns of plumber's tape ON EACH OF THE VESSELS when 'thumping', take out the connecting pipe and stick in a cork when not using the thumper??
If that all is not too confusing.
Geoff

I had a brew shop in NorCal gift me about 1/2 that amount. I used Jimbo's Malted AG Recipe and substituted the malted rye, it turned out great!Aussiedownunder01 wrote:The bloke at the home brew shop- gave me a 25 kg bag of malted rye

I am pretty new here, but at my work they were replacing close in boilers for hot water in the lab.
Got one of these boilers for 10 €.
Copper kettle in the interior with a content of30 litres.
I will make a nice pot still out of it.
When some colleagues asked what I wanted to do with it, and I explained, the offers of free fruit poured in. Got pears, berries and apples for free this september ! Two good deals

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
I only use my bakers yeast for making pizza dough and I bought a bunch of bottles (I think 5) of yeast on sale 15 years ago. I'm now using my last bottle out of the bunch and still making great homemade pizza. It expired in 2006.jus teasin wrote:I went to the dumpster monday. Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Got rid of all my propane tanks when I got out of distilling for awhile. I have natural gas for my BBQ.
Now that I got a new still I had to acquire a propane tank. Bought a full used propane tank for $15 off craigslist. That's less than what it costs to fill one here at some places.

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Of course you could run your still on natural gas. That is what I plan to do. Though at first it will be my little, six litre one, on the wok burner...

You can buy more of them and sell them on Marktplaats! I think some builder in the north will be interested.jepebe wrote:I am pretty new here, but at my work they were replacing close in boilers for hot water in the lab.

You can leave the insulation in place when you heat it electrically. Insulation saves heat and money.
Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Bought an analog thermometer for my pot still. I spent weeks searching all the brick a brack stores locally as well as online and couldn't find anything but a poultry temps (no good for this purpuse. The other day I was shoping @ local ALDI and lo and behold ther it was. Entire preserving set (ss strainer ss mason jar filling funnel, + what I was looking for all these days a 0-120oC thermometer (with 10inch ss probe ) All this for a reduced price of £7.99. Not sure if I will ever use it tho . Have since run my potstill without any thermometers just to see If I can manage to do it the old fashion way, and was happy with a result, but nonetheless it was one of my better purchases lately. Always out for a bargain (one of a better ones was getting a hundred kilo of sugar for £25 not so long ago) bought some more @40 pence a kilo the other week too. Also got meself 2 meters of 54mm (2") copper pipe and fittings for my next project (LM still) Paid nothing for it (ok cost me a litre of Odin's CF
, but i didn't have to do it , but since I really like my father in law...)currently looking for a cheap but reliable digital thermo, for a column. It's kind of sad that you can't just walk in to a shop and buy one here, pondering an online purchase, but I would prefer to touch and feel it first.

I just been to fetch some copper round head rivets I bought
- Not sure if they're big enough tho' They turned out to be about 3/32 x 3/8 - but they were a real bargain
£7.50 FOR ------- 2.4 Kg (about 5 1/2 lb )
I'll weight 'em up later and have a guess at how many thousand copper rivets I now have - and then get some tin and hammers out and practice learning to rivet !

How bout a riveter? Nice and reasonably priced @ screwfix (better than the normal gun for it has a swivel plate, so you could rivet inside a tight spaces too. http://www.screwfix.com/p/forge-steel-t ... eter/4079c" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollowPikey wrote:I just been to fetch some copper round head rivets I bought- Not sure if they're big enough tho' They turned out to be about 3/32 x 3/8 - but they were a real bargain
