I blame all of you. I needed a warning.

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

I blame all of you. I needed a warning.

Post by BumArmBob »

After all the cleaning and sacrificial run, my mash was ready and it was time to run.
I loaded my 5 gallons of wash and started the burner. An hour later I had flow and threw out a little over the first half pint.
I collected the next pint and proofed it, it ran right at 155 and It had a good smell was perfectly clear.
While the next pint was being collected, I decided to give it a taste and see what it was..... I wish you would have warned me because it was not at all what I expected.. Really expecting it to burn all the way down, I took a sip. While it was a little warm going down, it damn near burnt the hair out of my nose and my lips went numb!
For the love of God, I thought I was having a stroke!

None the less, with foreshots, heads, hearts and tails, I ended up with almost a gallon and couldn't have done it with all of your help!
Thank you guys!

I've only been doing this for a few weeks, and I know exactly what you're talking about. The quality of home made spirits is actually shocking when you first experience it. Congratulations on your new obsession. I reckon in a few years I'll be joining a still-aholics anonymous forum to try to stop.

If i'm beeing honest, I think alot of people here learnt that way. Myself included

I tell alot of new stillers, that collecting in seperate jars, is the easiest way to help get good stuff.

It's a practise thing

Practice makes perfect.

Too much practice makes your lips go numb.

On a serious note.
Now that you can make your own,be careful with your drinking. Its like having the keys to a candy store. Could become a problem easily.
Other than that, welcome to the club.
Remember not to blow yourself up,you only get to forget once!

I hear that, too easy having your own liquor store in the basement, open 24/7. Dangerous

True , dat . making a drop with no 'morning after' consequences and getting hammered in such a sneaky way takes some getting used to .
Proceed with caution .

Don't tell your SOH, and you might find a slightly less known use to numbness. :)

Enjoy yourself.

I have been compelled over the last couple days to say something, but didn't want to spoil the festivities. And I am very happy that you have been enlightened   Enjoy it!

We have posted warnings, but consider this your personal one. Don't drink almost 80% spirits. Yes, we have all stuck our finger under the pipe, and maybe you are talking about just a sip. But in case you aren't, don't be drinking high proof liquor. It can hurt your insides, whether it burns you going down or not.

With great smoothness comes great responsibility to know safety.

Cheers.

+1 theres a huge difference in your bodys ability to break down 180+ spirits and 80 to 110 and even at that theres many a man has fell foul of store bought lickor that would be in the latter category.
110 or 55% is enough and even too much for most. If coming out of the still your lips numb eyes water and nose burns up, you might know its good.
But it certainly doesn't mean you should drink it at that proof. It will do irreparable damage to your insides. Reality is yr lips are numb and your eyes and nose are watering because your body is trying to tell you its rejecting poison.
I thought i was wrong once,
But then i found out i was mistaken.

Nothing like that first burning sip of homemade shine!
Anything is possible, just takes a massive influx of time and cash.
