I recently got offered a used barrel for ageing my rum... will the fact that it had sherry in it effect it negatively and/or should I get it recharred?
Any input would be great

Ive used an X Port barrel once for Rum ..it turned out really nice.
I cant see the sherry having a negative effect long term.
Do you know what the barrel was originally, French ? American? Toasted or Charred?

A sherry barrel should be toasted uncharred french oak.
Personally I wouldn't charr it. I would use it like it is. There are some spirits on the market made with recharred barrels. I don't like them. Ugly sweet and not much spice. If someone wants to taste the difference, compare Talisker 10 (ex-bourbon casks) with Talisker Skye (recharred ex-bourbon casks).
