Hello All,
I'm a retired military vet with way too much time on my hands. I am a transplanted deep south swamp rat (hence the user name), but now live in a colder climate as I no longer have much love for humidity, hurricanes, sink holes, snakes, and skeeters large enough to carry off your young in the night....
My wife is confused by my interest in distilling, as it is easier to go to the store, buy a bottle of vodka and infuse it. My answer would have to be that I'm not interested in easy, I'm interested in doing it just because I can. It also didn't hurt that From a very young age I watched my Memaw make all sorts of concoctions with elderberries, mulberries and sugar cane. I inherited some of those recipes when she passed, and would love to do them some justice. I'm looking forward to the advice here on this board, and it looks like I have A LOT of reading to wade through. I will hold questions for now, since I'm sure that most of the valuable info I am looking for has been asked a thousand times already, and its simply a matter of educating myself a bit instead of looking for a spoon feeding session. Besides, I think if you take the time to properly research a topic, you learn and retain more than if you get a regurgitated answer.

Hey Wally.
Distilling is pretty much distilling. But the hobby fun I enjoy is the vast recipes to explore and ferment.
It's a soothing hobby because ain't nothing fast-paced about it. Mostly waiting or watching.
The rewards and failures are all up to you. Did I mash correctly? Hey, this whiskey came out great!
And little is as satisfying as seeing your carefully laid plans drip from the pipe and it's fricking the best you ever tasted.
It's simple when you follow what others have laid out for you. Get some experience, then experiment.
My wife sees my love of this hobby and she encourages me. And every man needs at least one great hobby.
Come on in and check us out. Find out how to do this right. And maybe make your first recipe something your wife likes.
There is some spoonfeeding available here from member 'Cranky': http://ww.homedistiller.org/forum/viewt ... 15&t=52975

Nice to have another Pacific Northwester on board. I can't wait to read about how your family recipes turn out.
You have the correct approach on research first, ask second. Using "HD Google Search", in the top toolbar of this site, will help narrow down specific searches quickly for you.
Welcome, and good luck.
