Distilling is nothing like brewing

Post by hadsperz »

I have been brewing for a few years and decided to try some distilling, thinking i had a good portion of the equipment needed. I never would have thought i was going to learn a whole new language. i have been reading the forum for a few months, mainly beginners section and spoon feed thread a few times. As soon as I finish my pot still I think I understand enough to do a clean run, sacrifice run, then try my hand at a single whiskey or rum run. My equipment is a 15 g keg w/ a 5500 ulwd element ran by a Auberins Dspr 220. I am about half way done with my pot still and lid attachment (please keep an eye out in the pot still build thread i hope it impresses). i hope to learn a ton more and thank you to everyone that has contributed to the forum.

well the good part is you have the fermenting process down which can be a big deal for beginers (with respect,i'm sure you've had a infected ferment before)
I came from the other way and it was the same.

we all look forward to hardcore copper/SS metal porn and solders/welds etc....
as with beer, it's all practise
take it slow and trust in yourself, and as always take notes so you can write down what you could do better next time, thats the trick

understanding the fermenting side is a big head start. Learning all the nuances and terms involved in distilling is your next challenge. I'm looking forward to seeing your build!

One of my favorite store-bought whiskey brands comes from a distiller who is associated with a craft beer brewer. Their single-malt whiskey, mashed by their beer brewing partner, has great flavor and mouth-feel. Its a tough wake-up call versus the sugar-head's that have become my regular recipes, even though some of those have been very tasty. I'm hoping you can bring some of your beer brewing finesse to the process when you get up and running. Good luck. Have Fun, Be Safe.
