Backset and feints noob question

Post by cellsaver »

Is it acceptable to use backset from different recipes as long as they are similar? Like Booner’s backset in UJSSM?

How about feints? Ok to mix Booner’s feints in with a UJSSM run?

C

Edit: lol damn spell check, won’t let me edit post title

There is no right or wrong ... it simply comes down to making something you like. Experiment and find a process that works for you.

Fixed the title for ya.

As for your question, what do you mean by acceptable? . How are you using it? Triple pot run or neutral?

Booners backset into a ujssm sounds great. I once saved all my bourbon only fients from an entire summer's season, and at the end made one big slow spirit run. Triple run bourbon? I guess so. It is awesome still drinking on it. Another time found whatever I could and made neutral.

We used to go by a genetic advice of, mix everything except keep rum feints separate. Then some crazy lunatic started putting molasses into bourbon grains and backset, and a new awesome drink was formed. So much for keeping rum separate!

Acceptable? We are the music-makers and the dreamer of dreams. You tell me what is acceptable

Thanks I'm giving it a try with the Booner's backset in the UJSSM, we'll see what happens!

I gave up putting feints back when it started giving me a smaller heart cut.

Saving them until I have around half to two thirds of a still charge then topping it up with some matching fresh wash for a spirit run works well for me and my pot still.

Agreed. I save my feints, then dilute with backset and run through 3 plates. Not as good of a whiskey as the original, but not too bad. Recycle, reuse, and all of that other PC stuff.

I currently have a sugarhead bourbon fermenting with ujsm backset, and will use ujsm tails for the spirit run
Its all about you here, if you like it, it's done right

I added persimmon brandy backset to a feedstock rum in place of dunder and made a very interesting rum. So much so that I'm going to repeat it in the next month or two.
