When you expect the service life of your new work gloves to be about a month.
When I was a boy, I prayed for a bicycle. I soon learned G~d doesn't work like this so I stole a bike and prayed for forgiveness.

Christmas came early for me . I built a 100# variable speed hammer that would run to 1200rpm .OtisT wrote:If an auto hammer is on the top of your Christmas list.

I'm tryin to get puter literate to retrieve some of my pictures and post here . I used an overarm leaf spring set and built a set of flat belt pulleys with a foot treadle to vary the drive speed . Machined my forging dies with a quick change base setup .
The whole holler knew when I was forging .

+1. My old man was a fabricator. All my years growing up I would wake to the ring of metal on metal coming from “the shop”. Great memories. .Truckinbutch wrote:The whole holler knew when I was forging .
I work metal as a hobby today and sure regret not keeping all my dad’s heavy equipment. Sigh.

So for those of us who are definitely not blacksmiths what are they? Got me curious.

Well I made a jig (?) out of a block of wood with a couple of bits of copper tube sticking up; and made some hooks out of coat hangers.
Quite proud of them.
Am I on the way to being a blacksmith?

They are called Tavern Puzzles. One has to remove the long skinny part at the bottom called the shuttle and separate it from the rest of the piece. It seems impossible because everything is locked together. There is a secret way of slipping the shuttle over certain loops in a certain sequence. They typically are not easy to solve.yakattack wrote:So for those of us who are definitely not blacksmiths what are they? Got me curious.
In the old days when everyone made their own whiskey, apprentices working for an established Smith would design/make these as part of their practice. It teaches one many skills that are applied to Smithing overall. The Smiths would place these on the tables of the local gin mills and taverns, usually with their business name and location stamped into a metal tag. The idea being, as patrons were waiting for their food & grog, they would try to solve these things. (Think the triangle/golf tee thing at Crackerbarrel) Some of these patrons were in need of a Smith's service to fix a wagon or harness or whatever.
George H.W. Bush was a huge fan of Tavern Puzzles. He had a good record for solving them. One he could not figure out was the "Dirty Dog" puzzle (shown at right in the photo) and wrote the guy who made it for the solution.

That's as much in the realm of a wheelwright or millwright as it is in the blacksmith's territory . All three crafts utilize it .sltm1 wrote:If you've used or know what a "traveler", is.
