Hello all

Post by Hellbilly13 »

I've been distilling for a few years now. My wife bought me a 1 Gal Clawhammer still for xmas. I figured out immediately that was not enough still, but I learned a lot with it on my own. I bought some copper and put together a 2.6 gal pot still. This is an ok size for me for now, but eventually I'll build a keg still. Then I found this site and man I wish I had found it earlier. I didn't even know about sacrificial runs; I guess I'm lucky I didn't make myself sick. I just cleaned real well with soap and water and went at it.

I ran a lot of batches of rum with very good results. I've been aging with cherry that I cut down and seasoned and oak from used barrel staves. I aged 1/2 gal in a barrel that I had from an age your own bourbon kit and it came out spectacular after 6 months. That was the best homemade likker that I have tasted. I'm originally from WV and have tasted a lot of shine; mostly rotgut.

I just finished reading the entire UJSSM thread. I fermented and stripped 5 generations in the time that it took me to finish. I'm looking at doing spirit runs in a few weeks and I have a 1.3 gal barrel waiting for product. I'm really looking forward to it; the stripping runs smell amazing.

Welcome, glad you are having success. I think when you go to a keg boiler you will find cuts much easier.

Not to mention the time savings from all those strip runs on the smaller still.

Welcome!

Welcome!
Yep, a larger still makes things easier to make cuts, and faster.

I'll post some pics soon. Should I post here, or is there sub-forum I haven't seen yet with still pics?
