cleaning vinegar

Post by cob »

this is just a warning that not all vinegar is created equally. I bought a gallon of vinegar labeled

"cleaning vlnegar" to use for rust removal hoping it was stronger than the household vinegar I been using

upon closer inspection this cleaning vinegar contains in addition to water and acetic acid

alcohol ethoxylate,... butyl carbitol,.. citris oil,... and preservative. while these ingredients

should have no adverse affects on my rust removal project, I would not use this stuff to clean my still.

read the labels first. alcohol ethoxylate, and butyl carbitol, are surfficants

I always use plain old supermarket vinegar for steam cleaning a new still, had no idea there were even different grades of vinegar. Were did you buy your so called cleaning vinegar ????

Standard vinegar has a hundred purposes and cleaning agent is one of them.

Thanks, cob.
That would be something my wife would think "better" and pick up for me.
Now I know to warn her.

it came from a dollar tree store. it says cleaning vinegar on the front with cleaning being

emphasized by being twice the size as vinegar, with the fine print stating for cleaning

purposes only, and there is no statement of what percent the acetic acid is.

further after 24 hours it has not touched the rust that 5% white distilled vinegar

would have cleaned up by now. could be that it will kill weeds but I bought it to

mitigate rust and it fails that test miserably.
