Angle grinder grain mill
The cunning plan is to malt my own grain and I need a grinder.
Looking on line I found a angle grinder grain mill on YouTube.
Here are the requirements, a variable speed grinder with a three (or four) screws into the body behind the disk. This allows the chassis to be fixed to the angle grinder.
The dimensions are shown below. I’ve guessed them from the video and they work.
Dumpster diving produced two steel panels from the side of a air con unit. (Free)
My metal work skill are not ideal but I was able to pull this off. It’s “rustic” and I’m sure you could do a great job.
Trim the blade and bend up the tips (why on earth would it be flat; non technical reason) so it fits inside the space
To drill the hole in the centre, I used a 20mm hole say, lots of wd40 and slow speed.
Set the angle grinder to the slowest speed and check the blade does not snag.
I’ll call it the skirt; The holes to let the grain out, I randomly picked 6mm bit and you can see it was fairly random. I also pop riveted this skirt to the outer shell to keep its shape.
The first c*ckup
Make sure the blade direction is forcing the grain down, away from the feed or you’ll be covered in grain.

Re: Angle grinder grain mill
At the slowest speed there was not much grinding, mid speed was pretty good but at almost top speed it was ideal
You will need a dust mask and a few mouse traps if you grind in your shed. (Snigger snigger )

Excellent. Gotta love DIY solutions and thinking outside the box.

Ingenious, LOVE the caliper hole measurement pic.
Keep it up, yer doing it rite... can't wait to see the box in action...
Maybe a baby chick heat lamp in the bottom and a duct booster fan out the top? Hmmmmm, mite need me one of those.

The drying rack is untested, modification required and not quite finished but for your entertainment......

"Might be kinda noisy"
I had the volume turned up high to hear you.
The cat was laying next to the computer speaker sleeping.
You can picture what happened when the grinder started shrieking

Re: Angle grinder grain mill
Kilned malt will take care of the grassy taste.
Time to start on that project

Re: Angle grinder grain mill
I would make a taller hopper as your loosing a lot of grain, but great idea.
Re: Angle grinder grain mill
Thank you for the advice ... the neighbours combines have just started the harvest so I’m sure there is plenty of barley to try malting and kilning.shadylane wrote:Kilned malt will take care of the grassy taste.

Might be able to hook a heat source to a drying rack and figure out how to control heat and time.Stew8 wrote:Thank you for the advice ... the neighbours combines have just started the harvest so I’m sure there is plenty of barley to try malting and kilning.shadylane wrote:Kilned malt will take care of the grassy taste.

Re: Angle grinder grain mill
You have some ingenuity..
The ideas and builds don't have to cost half an arm or be high tech, as long as it does the job.
I don't think I have any loose ear wax anymore after watching this video with headphones on..
Thumbs up also for your grain dryer.
