I posted this in here, instead of the other forum, because I didn’t want to mess up the other one... and basically... it’s a newbie question.
Ok Grain bills!
Firstly I thought it was the total cost of buying them, but soon worked out it was the percentage of ingredients to use. But I can’t see where it says what amount to use per volume of water.
I only have a 25/30 litre FV, so realistically, what weight of ingredients should I be using, if I wanted to end up with a total volume of 25/30 litres?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Grain Bills
You need to figure out your gallon points. For corn one pound of corn in one gallon of water with 80% efficiency you get 33 points for a starting gravity of 1.033 If you want to put 2 pounds of corn per gallon of water you get a SG of 1.066
Each grain has its value and you can figure out how much of each grain it would take to do 100% batch.
These are just my values. You can get your own by mashing one pound per gallon then taking a reading/ If you wanted to do all corn then you need 10.6 pounds of corn for 5 gallons of water.
1.070 SG = 9.2% Potential ABV
5 gallons = 70*5=350 gallon points
Corn = 33
Rye = 25
2-Row Barley = 28
Wheat = 30
Oats = 31
Grain needed for 5 gallon 100% mash
350/33 = 10.6 lbs of Corn
350/25 = 14 lbs of Rye
350/28 = 12.5 lbs of 2-Row Barley
350/30 = 11.6 lbs of Wheat
350/31 = 11.2 lbs of Oats

Re: Grain Bills
a kilo to a kilo and a half per 4l of water.
I usually do about 12 to 14 kg per 40l mash

Omg...... this is becoming a science.
Thanks for the replies. I can see I’m going to have to sit down and try to get my head around math. I’m rubbish at maths unles it’s just adding VAT. I can do that fine.
Thank you both.

Re: Grain Bills
Hello All, liked DuckofDeath explanation of points.
Let me start by saying I am not that good at building Excel spreadsheets with calculations in them.
It would be nice to ha a spreadsheet that could work this out for you.
For example, You enter:
Total gallons
Desired SG
Efficiency value
Then there is a list of grains with approx. points.
Next, you would go down to the Grains you would like to use and put in a percentage.
Corn = 33, 50% = Lbs of corn
2-Row Barley = 28, 20% =
Wheat = 30, 20% =
Oats = 31, 10% =
Output would be the amount of each grain.
Anyone see something like this?
Thanks

Yes sir, it is a science.Driver5773 wrote:Omg...... this is becoming a science...
In addition to the fine answers you've received, (even that gobbledygook metric that Swedish Pride is trying to force on everyone!
I did a write-up some time ago that may help you understand diastatic grain power: Designing A Recipe.
Follow some of the grain Tried & True Recipes to get some successful drinks made, and they'll give you great insight as to what's going on, too.
In no time it'll become clearer and clearer.
You can do this!

Monty, look for Beer Efficiency Calculators on the internet like this one: https://www.brewersfriend.com/brewhouse-efficiency/
