Oak, Sapwood or Heartwood can you identify?

Post by my98xc600 »

I was able to find some rough cut air dried White Oak from a sawmill. It looks like good oak to use for aging but my concern is if I'm dealing with any sapwood. It all looks the same color not lighter on the edges to indicate sapwood. My plan is to cut it 5 in long and split it into 1" sq. Is most of the sapwood removed in the milling process? How deep is the Sapwood on White Oak?

I can't really help with the identifying the wood question. IMHO, it all looks good.

When you get to cutting that wood, you would be well advised to cut it into 1" strips first. Then cut those to the 5" length. You'll have better control and spend less time with your digits in close proximity to a blade that don't know oak from meat.

Thanks Skipper. I know my use of power tools is not in question and I have plenty of experience using them.

Can't be too careful. Let 'em rip. Pun intended.

I don't see any sapwood there . I do see some awful pretty grain to be drowning in alcohol .

Looks like it's time to start toasting and see what happens. Looks like good wood to me!
Thanks!

Personally, I would add some of your wood charr'd to preference, but I would also add some raw white oak if ya want that twang...

I guess they attribute that raw twang to TN whiskies.

I LOVE raw oak "twang" (tannins?) yep.... sapwood and heartwood are easily identifiable, just split some wood and get back to us, the layers are obvious then
