My first boka run

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

My first boka run

Post by StarkBlood1980 »

So I’m currently doing my first spirit run on my home built boka, everything seems to be going well and I think I’ve detected where the heads have finished. Temperature at the plates is a steady 78.1c and I’m getting a shade under 95% abv so I’m happy with that.
Currently my take off rate is about 2 drops a second, as long as my temperature stays consistent could I increase my take off rate?

A bokakob is a liquid managed (LM) reflux still head. Adjusting the liquid take off rate will adjust the reflux ratio given you have a constant heat input. So, of course you can adjust the take off rate...just know that it may affect the purity of the product because you’ll be reducing the amount of reflux.

Be safe, responsible and discrete.

Thanks for the reply.
What I’m getting at though is can I increase my take off rate providing my vapour temperature stays stable?

Sure....up to the point it isn't stable. It's like sitting on a fence...you won't fall as long as you don't lean to one side or the other.

What'll happen is the reflux ratio will fall as you increase take off until the point where your purity will fall and the temperature will rise as you push more water through the output.

Short answer is yes......keep an eye on abv and temp.
