Just looking for clarification
Three buckets of about 5 gallons each of FFV in my still right now. How much foreshots should be removed ? If I was using the pot still column I’d take out 600mL - but that’s pot still land.
just messing with buckets and steel and copper.

Re: Just looking for clarification
I pulled 600mL off, as in a pot still pull. My thermometer under the top slant plate is stuck at 77.4 C. I put it back in full reflux/closed the valve. I'll let it sit right there for a bit while I keep reading.

Hey Billy,
Not the answer you're looking for, as I don't think there is an answer: But I've found each recipe
is different, and that's why I fly by the seat of my pants when it comes to fores. The overwhelming eye-watering
acetone/ foul alcohols are unmistakable. And once gone, I start saving for kiwi's cut method.
But since you've asked, 450-600ml pull off is likely "textbook" for 15 gallons, but don't deny using your senses in future runs
and see if your sense of smell and eye-watering matches up to textbook calculations.

8ozs for every 6gal of charge .

Re: Just looking for clarification
I run a 13g boiler and pull off 200ml fores each run whether it’s stripping or spirit. About 1hr heatup then 45-60min slow slow slow drip drip drip to collect the 150-200ml fores. Three strips equal a spirit so i’m taking about 800ml fores total across four runs in a batch of about 36g mash stripped to about12g sporit charge total. I feel like I’m pretty conservative with the fores fraction and hope i’m adequately into heads. Taste / smell / feel tell me that yes I am.
One thing I started doing throughout any run to cop a good feel and really experience some fragrance is to donthis:
hold my hands under the PC and gathering a generous amount of distillate. Then rub hands together thoroughly soaking with distilate - sorta like you might do with a hand sanitizer gel - then cup yoir jands and be careful because it will be strong - linger slightly to let some evaporate lest it overpowers you - smell deeply - rub - smell again - as the ethanol evaporates you’ll smell the leftover material more clearly.
I’ve found that this helps me judge where i am in the run very well and it keeps my hands clean’ish - at least into tails ha ha!
Anyway, my 150-200ml fores fraction low and slow for every boiler charge has done me well but I still monitor for taste and smell and texture.
Cheers!
Jonny
