Hello - What a great site. I have the utmost appreciation for the knowledge that has been shared in the various threads. I have been contemplating the idea of doing a little brewing then maybe just taking it to another level of complexity sometime in the future after my eyes are bloody enough from reading. I kind of like the thought of producing a little home made product just for the fun of it. I am sure it is a lot cheaper and faster to ride down to the Virginia ABC store and pick up an nice Bourbon or Irish to sip on, but as I found with roasting coffee there is a lot of satisfaction in figuring out how to do it yourself. I am really in no hurry to get going ... can't plant the grain and corn till spring anyways ... then it will be fall for I figure out if I got that right, or if I needed a little more manure spread around. So this may drive getting a few cows as a first order of business.
My hope is to run a small copper pot still, something less then 10 gallons, on lectric... so I only need a few fire extinguishers at the ready. I'm reading up a lot on building heat source controllers in my spare time. For now I am starting to sip on cheapest most awful whisky I can find, so if I ever do produce something it will taste great ... to me anyways.
Thanks everyone for all the great reading material... I will spend hours on the thumper digesting this.
Welcome Bill! Sounds like you have a good plan, slow and easy. Building a still is a lot like building a garage. You get it finished and you wish you had built it just a tad bigger...just sayin'
Enjoy your journey, it is a rewarding hobby. Much like roasting your own coffee, it tastes better after allowing it to off gas overnight.
+1 just saying
Save yourself a lot of drama and find a 15.5 gal ss keg. The ease of attaching the column/head using flange clamps worth the price of admission.
Good luck with your journey.
