Off flavours from Turbo wash

Post by Rockyathabaska »

I have learned my lesson to stop using turbo yeast for my birdwatcher’ wash. I’ve been much happier with bread yeast in my wash.
I do have 30 oz. of horrible tasting gin from my first Turbo run.
I’ve been trying to read up on how to get rid of the off tastes. Can I put into my next run or will it spoil whole lot?
I have some activated carbon if filtering is the way to go.
Any advice on what to do? Would seem a waste to use it to light the BBQ! Or where to direct my question on this site?

It’s 43% btw.
Thx, Rocky

Did you let it breathe for a few days? That helps quite a bit. Carbon polishing should help as well but it will remove some flavor. You can always run it again to help clean it up.
I don't drink alcohol, I drink distilled spirits.
Therefore I'm not a alcoholic, I'm spiritual.

Thanks, should I run it on it’s own or can I put it my next batch?
How would I Cabo polish it?
It tastes really boozey so I don’t think breathing it will help.

Drink it. Consider it your punishment for not doing enough research and don't do it again.

Or....

Save it for spongers who bring a bottle of fizzy intending to get drunk on your freebie likker.

Run it through the carbon, that will help . After that consider it a lesson learned.

Ha ha. I'm a slow learner, so you have to do that several times before I cotton on, Yummyrum :D

Read more and learn from your lesson ( and dump it)

Ha! No mercy for the noobs!
To my credit it was my first wash ever, and my last Turbo batch. Lesson learned.
Will try and savage it, somehow.
Trying to find a carbon filtering method to try.
Thanks for the opinions.

I made the mistake of starting off with Turbo 24/48 etc and made nothing but nasty tasting crap when I first started on my old still. I tried re-distilling 3 times, carbon filtering multiple times, leaving it uncovered for over a week. All in all it was junk! Consider it a lesson learnt. I used mine in the end for cleaning runs on my new still after modifying things. Having access to quick alcohol is a massive plus for cleaning or for testing. If you really don't like it you can defrost your windscreen with it in the winter.

Seeing as it was your first wash and logically also your first distillation , you should treat it as a cleaning run for your still . Don’t drink it . We call it a sacrificial run as its purpose is to clean any residue from the manufacture of the still .

I have a question on this point. I'm a noob. Can activated carbon kill the esters that makes my rum taste fruity?

I used activated carbon in my rum wash recently and I believe it gave me a higher hearts concentration, but that it unfortunately took away a fantastic banana flavor.

Duncan,
Can you take this question to the Rum forum? I think you'll have a lot better success with discussions there.

This thread deals primarily with "turbo yeast" washes rather than rum fermentation anomalies.
