Distilling Tumeric Leaf

Does any one have experience distilling Tumeric leaf?
I just got hold of a fresh sack about 8-10 kilos and am looking to distill it ASAP. Not sure of the yield % or if if its bets dried first, or soaked in hot water?
Most sources only mention Tumeric root oil. My still is a 70L copper alembic from Portugal.

No, thats tumeric root and its not a distillation.

I grow Turmeric in my garden , Ive only ever used the roots ? I know that in some Asian countries that the leaves are also used in cooking.
What is it that you hope to distill from the leaves ? and what is it used for ?

I did a little googling on “turmeric leaf distillation” and found one description of “steam distilling” the leaf. The root is steam distilled also based on what I found.

I don’t know for sure what “steam distilling” is. Likely water, but I could not rule out ethanol vapor.

Yes the leaves contain plenty of aroma and oil also. Steam distillation is your typical distillation for essential oils, when you pass steam through organic material.

Hey Ashtree:
Like SS said the Internet is your friend for information.
Ive never extracted turmeric E-oil because have no access to large amounts of turmeric leaves or rhizomes. But my friend the internet says: “The yield of turmeric oil obtained from leaves ranges between 2.75-2.83% and from rhizomes ranges between 2.38-2.48.” Read some of Bushman’s posts on steam distillation. It will help educate you on theory and how too. I have a couple of posts in the essential oil’s Section that have picks of my old boiler and my new stainless steel one. Just remember that like making gin, the boiler, column and libeg are now coated with residue from the oils you have extracted. So you probably should reclean your rig before using it to make alcohol.

That will get you going.

Yeh i wouldnt mix alcohol or essential oil distilling together either, i have seperate distillers. Not worth it.
Well i just spent the last 2 days distilling Tumeric leaf, processed about 8 kilos of fresh leaf. Im not getting anywhere near 2.7%
Thats 27ml per kilo right?

Physics isn’t one of my strengths. And after trying to use the calculations that are easily found on the web I realized that there are too many variables and unknowns to get a accurate answer for % yealds. Depending on when you harvest, type of plant and extraction methods the the % of essential oils may be different. For me I’ve found that if I turn the temp down and distill at a slower rate and crush or shred my plant material my yield is larger.
