Conversion chart for barrel size?

Post by HelmetHeid »

Hey,

So smaller barrels extract flavour from the oak faster than larger barrels, because of the increased surface area to volume ratio, right? So I was wondering if anyone has a chart showing the equivalent aging time for different barrel sizes.

You know:
10 years in a 200 litre barrel =
2 years in a 10 litre, 3 in a 12 litre etc etc

Does something like that exist?

Oaking is only a part of aging. Putting white dog in a small barrel might quickly make you some oak tea, but it won't make you aged likker in a hurry.

There are charts around that claim to be accurate.....not sure exactly where at the moment.

personally I can't vouch for accuracy, but seems most are agreeing with the numbers

The temperature swings where you're storing your barrel is going to make a big difference in how your spirit matures. If you have wide changes in temperature/humidity, your spirit will mature more quickly. A 53 gallon barrel of bourbon in Kentucky may comparatively mature faster than a 30 gallon barrel of the same type of spirit in Scotland, where the climate does not get such wild swings of temp.

I did the math myself on various barrel sizes and this is accurate as far as SA/V ratios. There are some charts on HD that are not accurate.

+1 to what Otis said.

My maths on surface area also tied to the embedded chart.
