NNB aka Newbie New build

Post by Jason1979 »

Hi guys, hope your all well,

Im new to this hobby and over the last month been making small progress on my build, I've added photos to the parrots I've built as a starting point while I wait for parts. Anyway I'm going to document my main build here on this topic.

I'v had loads of help from people on this site so any newbies just starting, your at a great place with great people.

So here goes with the progress on the 500mm x 54 copper shotgun condenser.

Column build

This is 2x 500mm 54mm (2inch) tube and only the second time soldering SS to copper, well chuffed

Ps, not water tested yet mind you

90 Degree for shotgun

Not sure to go with the long radius 90 or the standard?
1. Does the tighter bend have an affect on the vapour?
2. Will the long radius mean more off centre weight distribution?

And this arrived today, a 54mm reduced to 15

Hi J

On the 90 degree bend, I’d go with the longer radius, not so much for vapour, but it will move your product condenser a little further away from the hot column, in addition, also probably make it easier with product collection.

It will add to the leteral load on the column, I’m aware that you intend to make a carter head, so, you are more than likely going to have to look at some support anyway.

Top class work so far for sure.

Cheers

Hi all, hope everyone is well.

I know I'v been on radio silence for a while but been busy with normal life stuff like family, diy and work so the build been on delay plus, well build I mean searching and buying parts mainly. Had a number of problems with parts not meeting my own standards of quality to use on this build. Anyway, this will be a short update but with loads of images.

I'v built my fermentor and thats ready to rock 'n roll and super please how its looking and more importantly working, and the latter, fantastic, just need to get some cam locks but will at a later date.

re the still, changed the design as I originally had 2 sections of 500m copper and changes that to 315mm to meet the 20xID ratio. Ill upload the new plan. I need to pop some ferrules on 2 sections of copper tube, a 90 and on the shotgun and then start making my thermowells, then start on the electronics.

Speak soon and Enjoy the photos

Cooler build for the fermentor, decided with going for Stainless steel and copper fittings and platinum cured silicone tubing

Some work on the fermentor insides.

The copper coil was my second attempt as I wasn't happy with the 90 degree ends I had made. its 10mm microbore for the cooling and 8mm for the thermowell, all fitted with SS compression fittings.

Decided on a double STC100 for in the future when running 2 fermentors... Was told I'd end up with 2! so for an extra £25 it's a no brainer

Looking good so far. And sorry for the lack of text but loads on images, not being lazy, Just dyslexic.

Big thanks to you all that helped out so far and a massive thanks to Tony.

I would switch the first 2” copper section with the first sight glass so the sight glass is coming off the boiler. That way if your boiler does puke you’ll catch it before halfway up the column.

Hi Sharks_n_danger

Good idea and one I will try, as I've designed this as a modular system, will give it a go for sure, I need to learn how to drive it when finished and a puke will be something I probably encounter.

Swedish Pride, thanks, not cheating...well I'v had a lot of advice from members from this forum and also a tiny bit of help from a bootlegging level genius/build connoisseur, but the build parts all me.

Hi all

Would be great to get you thoughts, ideas or any concerns on the copper coil and thermowell I'v used on my igloo cooler fermentor (photo above). I have a red wine kit that I'm hoping the get going asap as my first ever ferment to she how it all works being a newbie, so just though I'd ask.

As you can see, I'm still ranked as a novice as I'v yet to run a mash or wine let alone run my still, so any help on this would be amazing. I may add, I have never fermented anything as yet so still reading up on the science of this biochemistry stuff.

Ps, at what stage do I go up a rank!! :D

Thanks

Jason

Just to clarify, are we talking about Copper corrosion issues due to mildly acidic washes or copper leaching into the wash?

Cheers

Great looking builds so far. Can't wait to see them finished, and all of the other builds in your future.
As for your question it goes by post count. There is a picture somewhere that shows post count and rank.
