I have had some success with OEG, and also a couple of other variations of gin (1 similar to Bombay; 1 using Rosemary and Lavender as the hero, and a Liquorice Root dominant)
So I have had a crack at some sloe gin, by rehydrating sloes adding caster sugar, then adding some OEG. Let it sit for 2 months, then syphoned off the nice clear liquid, before adding a further litre of OEG. That has since sat for another 2 months, before I took off the nice clear layer, intending to discard the rest.
However, thought I'd give it one more round, after tasting the 2nd batch - not as strong in sloe flavour as the first batch as you would expect, so I figured the worst thing that could happen is that I need to blend off some of batch 1 with 3 - anyway, I'll find out in a couple of months!
Batch 1 has a strong sloe flavour, but not over powering; Batch 2 is a little softer but still has the beautiful sloe flavour. Half of batch 1 has already gone
Got me thinking about what to do with the last batch. Thinking to add some neutral, juniper and coriander; let it sit for a bit, then run it through the still to see if I can get any sloe infusion in a clear gin...... The other thought, is to add some more OEG instead of neutral, juniper and coriander.......
Recipe:
500g Dried Sloe Berries
1L OEG @ 42%
250g Caster Sugar
Rehydrate berries for 3hrs in warm water, add sugar and OEG, allow to cool in a dark place. Shake weekly for 2 months then syphon off clear layer.
For the next batch, I just added 1L of OEG @4 2% to what was left in the jar, and repeated.
Anyone tried anything similar??

what is OEG?
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Re: Experimenting with Sloe Gin
Hi
I've recently done a sloe gin from a recipe supplied by a member on here not heard from him for a while but it had a few interesting twist. I did ask if he minded me sharing but I've not heard back so I presume it's ok. It turned out really well.
1 litre Gin
500g Sloes (frozen so they split)
50g Sugar
1 teaspoon almond extract (alcohol based, not oil)
1 vanilla pod
Stick it all in a jar and shake once a week. Leave it for a minimum of 8 weeks (we usually drink at Christmas from picking in October). Before drinking, pour off the sloe gin from the berries, and then filter using coffee filters. Scrap the berries or stick them in Vodka for something a bit different!
I'm thinking of swapping the vanilla pod for extract next time to save money.
