Heating my converted keg part 2.... more confused then ever!

Post by Jaxom »

The good news first. I just started a new job and got a smallish pay check and oddly enough a xmas bonus. And I've only been working there two weeks! Wow!

So this morning after I get off work and begin my "weekend" I decided to go and get a few more parts for my still. Had some really good luck today, but I'll mention that later in the post.

Just when I thought I understood how to set up the breakers and the wiring for my two elements, when I went to the electrical contractors supply store to get some of those parts, I ran into a few snaggs.

As I understood from my first post, I should use two 20amp breakers and make sure they were NOT on the same buss, or "in phase". It was also recommended NOT to use a dual pole aircon style breaker.

This is directly opposite of what I was told today. Mind you while asking for parts I had explained I was building an electric fermentator for beer making. NOT a still.

As we all know, breaker boxes have two hot leads and a neutral. For the sake of this example, I'm going called them hot left and hot right. My sub panel has 32 breakers slots. 1-16 on the left and 17-32 on the right.

What this electrcial supply person told me is this. Breaker 1 will draw it's power from hot left and breaker 2 draw it's power from hot right. If I understood what was said in the first thread is correct, this is exactilly what we want, no? In this case a dual pole breaker is what I'd be looking for, instead of two seperate breakers.

Folks, I know we've gone over this all before, but I really want to be carefull with working the power end of things. Besides, I have all the parts now except the my column pipe and the parts to connect up the elements.

Beyond wiring the breakers, I also need to know what style of outlet to get, what grade cord as well as plug.

Now, about controlling the primary element, my 1500watt one. I was actually looking for this at the electrical supply store, and according to this guy, there is no such thing. He did mention fan regulators, but they only have a 1amp ablity. Guess he never heard of that unit Knuklehead uses. Anyone know of something simlar here in the states?
