Is it normal for the first alcohol run to stink?

Post by Liamo »

Like it says on the tin, I did a cleaning run of sugar wash and the distillate had a very offensive smell, like you wouldn’t want to be close to it kind of stink. It was hard to nail down, but I would say there was elements of polish and wet dog in it. Did a normal vinegar run, scrubbed everything with fish soap, then did just a table sugar wash. That’s the stinky one. Is that a sign a load of crap got cleaned off the still or is it more sinister? Don’t want to put genuine whiskey through it and waste it all!
