why?
1.generally when they have drifted off topic, like a welcome thread that becomes a discussion about another topic...it forces the discussion to the right board so people searching in the future can find the discussion filed properly.

a new member asks about how to build a flute, and soon there is 3 pages of good information that is lost in welcome thread instead of being in flute construction for example.

2. when a pissing match starts turning nasty, opinions differ but direct name calling BS will get a lock, a warning or a ban

3. rules violations

4. temporary locks when we are trying to fix something, or having a discussion about it.

5.all classifieds and all tried and true recipes are locked. discussions on t&t are in a parallel topic, so as to reduce clutter.

how? by a mod or admin, with unlimited cosmic power.
I finally quit drinking for good.

now i drink for evil.

Generally you can tell who locked a thread and sometimes there is an explanation why. If you disagree with a trade being locked your best course of action would likely be to message that mod with a reason why you think it is in the forums/members interest to unlock said topic.
If your reason holds any merit it will likely be Considered or taken to the mod team but keep in mind threads are always locked for a reason.
