Strange Twist of Fate!

Post by navan4 »

Well I guess fate put me on a different path than I thought I would follow.
Last monday night I was browsing the different hardware stores websites, as I do once or twice a week, when my jaw just dropped, -65% discount on all the 2" copper pipes and fittings, so I decided to finish early on tuesday and go straight to the hardware store to purchase 2 x 12’ copper pipe, 2 x copper tee and 3 x copper elbow, all for a mere $ 120.00 cdn ($ 90.00 usd) just simply elated to have this unexpected event happen to me, fate handed me a christmas gift.
I had to cut the pipes down to 6’ pieces so they can fit in the car, I must keep in mind to purchase a good grinder, since my cheap metal saw is not the best for this thick copper to make a straight cut. It’s nice and thick 2mm copper, just awesome.
So now I can build a CCVM, CM and pot still column, in a modular fashion, as Cayars pointed out extensively the benefits of going this way, also the Still It, CCVM video was a good inspiration for me, but I think what inspired me the most, was Swedish Pride’s comments and pictures that left a mark, if this guy can bind copper sheets together and succesfuly create pipes with it, how can I not at least put in motion the construction of a colum.
I have found also kegs that are reasonable drive from my home for between $ 75.00 to $ 100.00 cdn ($ 55-00 to $ 75.00 usd) but we will wait and see how the column building goes, speed wise and competence wise.
At worst I will just buy the boiler from the still I wanted to originaly purchase. Since I have limited time and that I will purchase a torch, I will do a better repair work on my cheap chinese still, so I can keep using it until I finish my building columns experience.

Merry Christmas to all of you and your family, may this day be full of joy!

Why doesn't this kinda thing ever happen for me? I live in an Anheuser-Busch brewery city, so you'd
think there'd be kegs for sale (illicit or otherwise) on every street corner. Well, mister, you'd be wrong.
The few you do see, are obscenely priced.

And 2" copper? Fuggedaboudit!
You must live right, navan4. Build something nice, then post its photo and really make me jealous.
Merry Christmas!

I'd recommend grabbing a pipe cutter, they do great with the copper, and you barely lose any in the process (as compared to grinding), plus the cut will be perfectly straight every time. I have a 2¼" (max) pipe cutter that I used on my 2 inch pipe it was quite nice, cost me about 20 bucks, and uses the same little disk wheels as pocket pipe cutters. If it ever needs a replacement blade it's about 5 bucks at the local hardware.

Awesome find though, wish I could have found a deal like that when I was looking.

Well I try to, but I do have some vices, for example consuming my produce. :D
Thanks for the vote of confidence, will do my best to meet your expectations.

Well that's a great idea, I thought the pipe cutter would only be good for smaller diameter pipes.
Thanks so very much!

Those are very good prices, the pipe cutter for 2" diameter pipe, locally I have little to choose from and most are poorly rated, but I found one on the net for $ 30.00 cdn ($ 23.00 usd).
The dephlegmator and condenser, will most likely order from china, since I got to order the tri-clamps from there anyway.

I just ordered the other parts I will be needing to assemble my modular columns, I will wait until my return for purchasing the keg or boiler.
The lead times are excessive (39 to 50 days) and the post office keeps them for 18 days after first delivery attempt.
