Greetings all.
I first started distilling in 1986 and my basic knowledge was that alcohol boiled off at around 78 Celsius and was done in something called a still. Still at a basic level of technical do-it, l built a still for myself which is still (pardon the puns) in use today. I had noone to guide me through the process, so my knowledge was hard won and l realise that one will die an apprentice in most things. I had never been able to measure abv, but judged roughly by taste and how much burnt off in a teaspoon. I did have what appears to be an industrial alcoholometer which measures between 50-100%, but never produced enough volume to actually measure it.
Long story short, a friend who is very technical, started me on the journey of "You have to know more". This led to my wife buying me a one-off produced reflux still built by said friend, which (Blow me away completely), produced 95.something close to perfection, first time round. I was like a bloody kid in a toy shop. Cut by cut measured full marks and for the last while l have merely sat grinning at the bottles which l had not given to my wife for experimentation.
I am convinced l will be learning a lot here......thank you for the platform.
Greetings from the Southern tip.
