What to call my whiskeys

So the burning question I have is what can i call my whiskeys?
Currently I'm in Australia and we don't have a real signature whiskey like say American bourbon or Scotch whiskey.

So what am I allowed to call my whiskey when trying to explain / differentiate between what type it is?

I'm currently making single malt 100% malted barley whiskey. (scotch whiskey) but I'm not allowed to call it that because I'm not in Scotland, although I did once buy a bottle of Laphroig so technically I do own a piece of land in Scotland.....
I'm am 1/3 Irish. Can I call it Irish whiskey?

What about when I start to make Corn Whiskys? I'm not allowed to call it bourbon.

I hate the idea of having to end everything with the term "Style whiskey" like this one is a "....... Style whiskey"

What do you guys call your whiskeys? how do you say it's a "..... Whiskey"?

It's your spirit, you can call it anything you like. If it mimics bourbon call it bourbon. If scotch is your recipe call it scotch. Rules we live by says nothing against it. I bet the government won't care what you called it.

Plenty of commercial whisky made in Australia in the Scotch style which is sold as Single Malt Whisky. If it's an inferior bourbon style it'll normally be called a Grain whisky.

But really, call it what you want. If it's a scotch style, call it scotch. If it's a lesser bourbon style, call it bourbon.

Country of origin is unimportant in my opinion......quality is what counts.

I'm pretty hard core about my presentation. Even tho I only give it away. I make a lot of apple cider and apple and prickly pear cider. So it all gets bottled up nice and labelled. I will see if I have a pic to post

or get all fancy an tie it to the local area a bit more. "Roo Sweat" and "Croc Tears" are more fanciful and you'll feel no need to stick to a certain mash to adhere to commercial rules

Even in NZ, where it is legal to distill, it is still illegal to give it away. I used to put some effort into labels for wines etc., when I first started brewing, but not for my hard likker.
Newish made whiskey hasn't earned itself a fancy label yet and aged fine whiskey that I've have been pampering for several years is too good to give away and will carry on improving with age as long as I don't make the mistake of giving it away. If I was wealthy and had a large rickhouse stocked with barrels it might be another story, but I'm not and only have a small still and a shed in the garden.

If the grain bill and process matches that of scotch, bourbon, irish whiskey, canadian whiskey, etc then call it as such. I think it helps communicate the ingredients and process. The exception is obviously the rule about "where" it is made. The location rules are for commercial purposes only to protect revenue and can be thrown out for hobbyist. Other exceptions are things like aging in a cask/barrel. For our purposes that would include using staves, sticks as a means of infusion for the aging. Personally, I do believe if it calls for specific type of ingredient, like American Oak, or French Oak, or Champaign Grapes that could arguably be different from other varieties then I think those rules should be followed. But this is just all my opinion and no hard rule. But I think most on here would agree.

I sometimes name my products influenced by something that was happening on the day or where it was made. E.g. Whisky that was distilled at the beach in bad weather and goes cloudy when proofed is likely to be named something like "Cloudy Bay Rye" (or whatever the grain was). The same product distilled in the hills might be "Misty Mountain Rye".

Similar here. My whiskey made from Chicken Scratch Grains (usually corn, wheat, barley) is called "Old Scratch" and gets labeled as the taste of eternal damnation. I have one that folks here on the forum helped me name as "Mudd Butt". There's a story behind that. A couple of recipes that come from the tried and true recipes get named as they have been dubbed by the contributor. I have some Honey Bear Bourbon downstairs now that's just a bit over-oaked but mellowing well (thanks SCD).

Whether it's a bourbon or a scotch or not - that's up to you. The "Laws" that dictate such labels are sort of thrown out the door in your case, are they not?

Well, I decided on a name for my first batch.

"The Naughty Forties"

As I basically made it over my wifes 40th birthday

The Mash went on the week before her birthday and the whiskey went into the barrel the week after her birthday.
She absolutely loves the name and I'm not gonna Lie if it comes true I'm not going to complain!
