Get the sugar industry involved
I was wondering with all the efforts around trying to legalize, has anyone considered hitting up the sugar industry for help? I know that they were wanting to increase their market share enough to use morally corrupt practices like bribing the scientific community for the last half a century so if someone pointed out to them how much sugar gets used to distill they might jump behind this bandwagon.

In agreement with " that's about as likely as pie in the sky "
Furthermore, they are already repeaing the benifits of the sales on sugar..

Re: Get the sugar industry involved
Isn't it also more economical to make neutral from corn than sugar?

Farmers paying a premium for a lesser quality blackstrap.
Lesser quality in that technology now allows for even more sucrose extraction.
It ain't yer granddad's blackstrap no more.
Farmers paying more for a lesser product than distillers are willing to pay for a better product.

From the look of my shed, we should enlist the glass jug industry...

*If* you had an efficient catalyst to hydrolyze cellulose into fermentable sugars... Actually switchgrass provides about 5x energy out as opposed to energy to produce, while corn is about energy neutral.Expat wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2020 6:15 pm*If* you had an efficient catalyst to hydrolyze cellulose into fermentable sugars... I’m talking about hoe-made sippin likker not industrial fuel production. 2lbs of corn in a gallon of water converts to about 1.060 where about 1.4lbs of sugar get you to about 1.060. A 50# sack of feed corn around here is about $7 where 50# of sugar is somewhere around $80. For the likker produced it’s pretty clear to me.

I doubt switchgrass makes a very good whiskey either.

Wow Johnny, that's a crazy sugar price. I just bought four 25 lb bags of sugar at Walmart in the nothwest USA. $8.88 USD for 25 lbs.jonnys_spirit wrote:I’m talking about hoe-made sippin likker not industrial fuel production. 2lbs of corn in a gallon of water converts to about 1.060 where about 1.4lbs of sugar get you to about 1.060. But i prefer the taste of corn. The sugar will be for a sugar head on spent grain.

Re: Get the sugar industry involved
Hi Tummy, I just looked on amazon for that price so it may not be the best price in town. A quick google reveals that 25# generic sugar is about $11 @ the Kroger down the street here in Nashville. I agree that the corn likker is better but sugar is certainly less fuss and a sugar head on spent grain helps optimize the effort involved which is hard to ignore.

Walmart is a much better price for sugar.

I'm sure I'm alone on this, but I enjoy being an outlaw.

I'm still that way.
I'll always be that way.
I consume and share what I make. Never barter. Never sell. Just make. drink. share.
I like it this way.
And it don't even make sense to be a legger' considering the proliferation and cheapness of decent commercial spirits. I'm going to continue appreciating my hobby
