Safe to shalack the crackly end of a coon pecker?

Safe to shalack the crackly end of a coon pecker?
What would be a good preserving/stabilizing coating to protect the brittle end of a coon pecker? I imagine heads would strip off a lot of coatings. It wouldn't be good to get dissolved chemicals in the end product.
