T500 boiler. Lit on fire.
So i have a pot still head i built for a t500 boiler. Well the element burned thru the plastic bottom that holds the stainless boiler. This is the 1600w version. At least fifty runs thru it before, but it was insulated etc etc so maybe thats on my end. Overall Id say do not modify this still and if you own it as it comes, sell it.
My mods were a 2" ferrule soldered on the cap, to a 2" bend that necked down to a 3/4" over 1/2" liebig that is 39 inches.
The wires burned thru and lit the plastic bottom frame on fire. Doubt it had to do with my mods but ffs, that was crazy. Good thing i had it on a grid stand.
Just my .02

on the bright side you get to build yourself a new keg still though, so fun times ahead!

Re: T500 boiler. Lit on fire.
There more to this than what being stated.. this is an electrical issue, and nothing to do with the mod that was done..
There was either more power to the element than the wires could handle, or the wire size was not the right gauge, or a one of the connections was not properly done..

Oh i have a modular keg setup, just not one that run in the kitchen of the house... was getting a start on stripping 66 gallons of ujssm with the "easy electric setup"
Got like 1/2 gallon of low wines at least...
Mars: everything was hooked up legitimately and as i have used it for 2 years now, just think the wiring went bad.

I would be in agreement with the wiring going bad, maybe cause it was undersized to start with, and problem arise when use for long periods of time..
Another thing with electrical connecting, they require to tighten / bound down good, otherwise then will heat up..

Yup. Gearing up the half barrel and thump to run on the gas outside. Thatll be the way till i convert to submersible elements

Am I the only one who cringed when you mentioned you used flour to put out a fire?
Flour is combustible, so please don't do it again.

Re: T500 boiler. Lit on fire.
Depends on the flour. It worked and it was what was on hand for electrical fire situation. Salt preffered

Thats a bit scary, was it being run as standard? I only ask as the voltage regulators look dodgy to me.

That's very scary Chauncey. Goes to show us all that completely unexpected shit can happen with anything, any time. Glad no one and nothing else was harmed.
Can you remove the bottom, inspect, replace/upgrade the wire and salvage that thing? I've never used one of those, I've always used modified kegs.

Nope, you are not. Got lucky this time. If you think an ethonol bang is bad try a combustible dust for comparison.gwizard wrote: ↑Sat Jul 11, 2020 5:50 pm Am I the only one who cringed when you mentioned you used flour to put out a fire?

Sure its been mentioned but um .... you know flour is explosive right ? not the best thing to be throwing at a fire next time try petrol at least its ONLY inflammable lol (to the undoubted nay say'ers , google it ! used to work in a chocolate factory , no not willy wonka,s, biscuit's etc no switches naked flames or electrical things anywhere near flour it goes boom when you hit the correct air density !! )
