Malting grain again

Post by Fiddleford »

About to partake in a batch of malting, I haven't done anything since my last post because life, covid, my grain supplier sunk their business. I still have that batch of grain
from 2017 but temps are more consistent and I have a garage now.(I moved BTW)

I am just doing barley and I need to look through my old posts to re-learn but I have a camera and will document what I can

I malt small quantities to make my beer and sometimes some distillate. It's a great satisfaction!

I havent figured out the new imgur method people are using but I forgot to actually take pictures before cleaning off my malting table.

The barley is already starting to chit so I am doing a final 5 hour soak to make sure it is all moist enough, after this I wall leave it out with a sheet on it and turn it every now and then. The temperature is perfect for this the malt has been maintaining a 10 C which I have high hopes for this batch of malt

Just my 2 cents worth
Once the barley is already starting to chit.
Be careful about soaking it any more.
It's real easy, to drown the germinating seeds

To dry the grain I am building a drying box tommorow that will be p[laced ontop of my Chiminea and I will have to learn how to regulate the temperature with it, but this way I can smoke the grain

This is what I have built, modified over time. All with pieces recovered except the electronic part (maybe electronic is a big word here!)
