Probably want to reword that question to: Before you started distilling, what was your favorite commercial scotch?

I enjoy pretty much all of them and particularly the heavily peated ones.

The Balvenie double wood, their Caribbean cask, Aberlour 16, and their A'bunadh. Not necessarily in that order. The Macallan is also good.

Do we have to pick only one???

The Glenlivet 21 is nice, though I tend to buy the 18 for the price... but I keep going back to Lagavulin 16 with it's lovely burnt dirt taste

I've been known to buy cheap Grants, a case at a time occasionally :wtf: I quite like it, it's just a bit nasty around the edges.

Too difficult a question to answer, honestly.

Of the many scotches tried over the years, Scapa 16 stands out above the rest. In one sip, I could smell and taste the terrior - the cold northern sea air, windswept peat and sweet barley. Incredible. Unfortunately, this expression was discontinued in 2016, and if you can find a bottle, it'll cost upwards of $225.

When you absolutely must lick the barber's strop after it's been soaked barbicide.

That said, I also love it.

Jeez, where to start...

Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Balvenie 12 Doublewood
Balvenie Week of Peat
Benromach 10
Talisker 10

Unfortunately I've only been remotely close to recreating the Doublewood, so Scotch still costs me too much. Once I figure out peat I'll be set though.

I have a couple of the Laphroag bottles here that are mentioned above, quite good but the 10 Cask is a bit smokey even for me.
My all time favorite bottle for character of spirit was that Auchentoshan 21 Sherry cask finished, that was memorable.
Had a few of the 21 gun salute bottles that are so crazy over priced, IMO anything from Chivas may be smooth but just doesn't have that character.
Some Ardbeg 12 that was pretty good.
Had a Glen Grant 1967 a while back too.
Since I have been distilling and aging my own I don't buy as much.
Last good one I bought was a Bunnahabhain, that was tasty.

Lagavulin 16 is and always will be an absolute classic. Every single home ought to come with a smoke detector, a fire extinguisher, a toolbox and a bottle of Lag! I really appreciate everything Bruichladdich has been doing business wise and style wise, not sure I have a favorite from that stable, but I will remain a consistent once a year buyer of whatever they've got, probably for life. I think every Arberlour I've had is not only good, but a pretty good value compared to other distilleries, every bottle just punches above it's price. I go to a thing every few years that has Macallan 18 at an open bar, hell yeah, but I don't think it's worth the price if I'm paying.

Aaaaand. I drink plenty of monkey shoulder, dewars, old smuggler, whatever. I grew up drinking cheap scotch, and never outgrew it. I'm pretty sure there isn't a scotch I would turn down.

A simple highball of Johnny Black and seltzer is my go to lawnmower scotch, and I often have a pint in the freezer just for such occasions. Actually, you know what? Wrong season maybe, and I sure didn't cut no grass, but I just changed the mineral profile in my seltzer so Imma make myself a highball!

As Harry Jackson always told us, Slàinte!

That just reminded me, I did enjoy a couple bottles of Dalmore and Dalwhinnie a ways back.
