Can someone with little to no experience produce a decent drinkable rum for mixed drinks fairly reliably using one of the "Tried and True Recipes"??
I hope this question is okay to post in this section. I know that it is more of a novice/beginner type question, but it is specific to rum. I don't think I would be asking this question if I was just thinking of running sugar washes through a reflux still, and I think it is a different discussion than talking about all grain mashes or botanicals in gin baskets...
I am very new to the world of distilling. I do not own a still yet, but have been doing lots of research. My goto drink is Dark Rum and Pepsi, but I like most rums (white, amber, Dark, several spiced rums, etc.), most of the time mixed with Pepsi. When talking about buying/building a still my wife keeps asking how sure I am that I will even like what I make. Which is a valid question, especially if you were to compare it to making your own beer, wine, or cider. I think that distilling should be more predictable than beer and wine, given that you are sort of pulling what you want out of the wash, but with no experience I can't say this for certain. I guess the goal would be to produce rum that I like and will use, while I work toward improving my product. Or is a still just likely to end up collecting dust because it's just too finicky of a process? Keep in mind that I do not expect perfection from the first batch, but it would be nice if it was drinkable. TIA
