Old School 3" Flute

Post by ezlle71 »

Well Folks, I finally got my flute built! I had been bitten by the flute bug for a long time. A good plumber friend of mine donated some 3" copper tubing he had from a job so i got to work. I really admired Saltbush Bills's old school bubbler so i based it loosely off his design. I wanted to use my existing davies product condenser(see Brutals inner tube condenser thread) and a drop in Dephlegmator. Just a simple 4 perf plate tower ala NcHooch's 3" flute.
Now everybody's favorite part, Pics!

here are the plates, 84 1/16 holes, after pic i drilled 9 more on the top plate in the dead area

here is the plate tree, i used 1/2 in ID hard copper downcomers. Flared and sized out at the top, with a 1/2 in bath depth. I went back and forth on downcomer size, but in my research found several experienced builders say 1/2 was fine on a 3". 4" plate separation on the tree and just dump downcomers on the dead spot on plate.

I was gonna go with four 3/4 vapor tubes in a drop in shotgun. I decided i'd give this "tincan" dephleg a try. 2" dvw annealed and flanged on both ends with a piece of 3" split and wrapped around. We will see how it works. If it don't i am seriously considering a dimroth drop in.

getting ready to solder the trap adapters on, hand sanded "ugh" to fit the column. 1.5" adapters with 1.75" 1/8" thick borosilicate glass discs
