C.O.B. update

Post by Honest_Liberty »

I just called my locale feed supply.
Manna Pro and another major producer are no longer producing C.O.B.
They are still producing "Three-way" which is actually Sweet Feed (C.O.B. soaked in Molasses)
This always came in a plain brown and maroon bag with the words "FEED" on the front, ingredients on the tag. Very basic. No pellets.

only one major manufacturer she said is still continuing it, but they needed a $2000 shipment to order.

Very dissapointed. I'm wondering if others have run into this. I'm in Denver Metro region, Colorado

All grain bourbon for testing my patience

I just buy a bag of steam rolled corn , a bag of rolled oats and a bag of rolled barley and make my own. If I want a sweet feed I add molasses. Pretty simple really.

That's what they are saying and I like that, but I wasn't interested in purchasing 130-150 lbs of grain when I can only effectively use 50 per batch.

I agree with your thoughts but I liked the idea of a simple Pre mix I could grind, heat, add enzymes, and set in my cooler.

I have run across the same problem but I am up to mashing 40 lb at a time and doing that at least every other weekend so I am probably just going to do like she said and mix my own.

The second link Twisted Brick posted is definitely worth a read. It explains the reasons for not cooking all your grains at the same temperature. Off flavors can occur when some grains are cooked too hot.
Just a little add on. When I do an all grain COB I like to use steam rolled corn cook it then add oats at around 170 this will drop the heat of the mash finish cooking the mash and add malted barley at 15 to drop the temps down to 148 for conversion. I do like a sweet feed whiskey but I like the molasses flavor so I add around 1 quart of molasses per 5 gallons of mash. Actually more like a Rumsky.

Corene, I think that's what I've been finding with my sweetfeed. I think adding such hot water places an acrid bite that I perceive on the back end, right in the middle of my tongue.
